Bioavailability and methylation of bulk mercury sulfide in paddy soils: New insights into mercury risks in rice paddies

Hong Li et al.

Summary: Research shows that bulk alpha-HgS can be dissolved and methylated in paddy soils, leading to a significant increase in MeHg content in rhizospheric soils, and subsequently resulting in the accumulation of THg and MeHg in rice grains.

Two metallothionein genes highly expressed in rice nodes are involved in distribution of Zn to the grain

Gui Jie Lei et al.

Summary: In this study, highly expressed metallothionein genes OsMT2b and OsMT2c in rice nodes were found to play a crucial role in zinc distribution to grains through chelation and transport, impacting grain yield. Knockout of these genes led to increased zinc accumulation in nodes but decreased zinc distribution to panicles, resulting in reduced grain yield. The findings suggest that OsMT2b and OsMT2c are key players in zinc distribution in rice plants.

High-Affinity Sulfate Transporter Sultr1;2 Is a Major Transporter for Cr(VI) Uptake in Plants

Zhong-Rui Xu et al.

Summary: The study identified the high-affinity sulfate transporter Sultr1;2 as the major transporter responsible for Cr(VI) uptake in Arabidopsis, with Sultr1;1 playing a negligible role. Modulating the expression of Sultr1;2 can reduce the uptake rate of Cr(VI) in plants, leading to lower tissue accumulation of Cr.

Identification of a new function of metallothionein-like gene OsMT1e for cadmium detoxification and potential phytoremediation

Justice Kipkorir Rono et al.

Summary: This study identified a novel function of OsMT1e in rice, showing that its expression is induced by Cd exposure and enhances cellular tolerance to Cd. OsMT1e overexpression in rice resulted in improved growth and increased Cd accumulation, while RNAi lines exhibited reduced Cd accumulation and sensitive growth phenotypes.

Methylmercury formation in boreal wetlands in relation to chemical speciation of mercury(II) and concentration of low molecular mass thiols

Van Liem-Nguyen et al.

Summary: This study investigated the relationship between Hg-II speciation and MeHg formation in boreal wetlands, using isotopic tracers and thermodynamic speciation models. The results showed a decisive role of Hg-II concentration in porewater for Hg-II methylation, and a significant positive correlation between methylation potential and low molecular mass thiol compounds of biological origin.
