Membrane interactions of non-membrane targeting antibiotics: The case of aminoglycosides, macrolides, and fluoroquinolones

Adree Khondker et al.

Summary: The study examined the interaction between different types of antibiotics and bacterial membranes, finding that the antibiotics increased membrane disorder without causing membrane damage. Antibiotics were observed to partition into lipid head groups, with some also partitioning into the bilayer core.

Visible-light-assisted peroxymonosulfate activation over Fe(II)/V(IV) self-doped FeVO4 nanobelts with enhanced sulfamethoxazole degradation: Performance and mechanism

Junlei Zhang et al.

Summary: The synthesis and application of Fe(II)/V(IV) self-doped FeVO4 nanobelts as a visible-light-assisted PMS activation system showed significantly improved removal of SMX antibiotic pollutants. The system not only effectively degrades SMX, but also can be applied to various actual water bodies such as medicine wastewater and river water.

Mechanistic and kinetic insights of synergistic mineralization of ofloxacin using a sono-photo hybrid process

Ritesh Patidar et al.

Summary: The study presents an ultrasound-photocatalysis based hybrid method for effective degradation/mineralization of the bio-recalcitrant pharmaceutical pollutant ofloxacin. The combined US/UV/H2O2/ZnO method showed significant synergy with OFLX degradation rate of 94.2% and total organic carbon removal rate of 45.1% under optimal operating conditions. The power-law kinetic model well represented the degradation kinetics with orders of reaction being 2.2 and 1.9 for different hybrid methods.

Double photoelectron-transfer mechanism in Ag AgCl/WO3/g-C3N4 photocatalyst with enhanced visible-light photocatalytic activity for trimethoprim degradation

Gongduan Fan et al.

Summary: Antibiotic contamination is a growing concern, leading to increased scrutiny on solutions like the AgAgCl/WO3/g-C3N4 (AWC) nanocomposites for trimethoprim degradation. Experimental results showed high efficiency with 99.9% of TMP degraded within 60 min using AWC at 0.5 g/L concentration. The proposed double photoelectron-transfer mechanism and identification of degradation pathways through theoretical calculations and experiments further support AWC as a promising photocatalyst for removing TMP from aquatic environments.

Synergetic decolorization of azo dyes using ultrasounds, photocatalysis and photo-fenton reaction

Antonis Maroudas et al.

Summary: In this study, ultrasound irradiation, photocatalysis with TiO2, Fenton/Photo-Fenton reaction, and their combinations were investigated for the decolorization of industrial dyes to study their synergy. The experiments showed that the combination of different frequencies of ultrasound with the Photo-Fenton reaction can significantly enhance the degradation of azo dyes.
