Ecological selection of bacterial taxa with larger genome sizes in response to polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons stress

Yuzhu Dong et al.

Summary: The study found that polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) pollution can select bacterial taxa with larger genome sizes. These bacteria are more adapted to polluted environments and have increased horizontal transfer capacity of degrading genes in the co-occurrence network. This finding is of great importance for community stability and potential biodegradation strategies.

Succession of diversity, functions, and interactions of the fungal community in activated sludge under aromatic hydrocarbon stress

Shuzhen Li et al.

Summary: This study systematically investigated the responses of fungal communities under continuous aromatic hydrocarbon stress and found a decreasing trend in fungal diversity during the treatment. Community succession was observed, with an increase in the relative abundance of some typical degraders. Predicted functions of the fungal community suggested the importance of certain enzymes in degradation processes. The study also demonstrated the deterministic assembly process of fungal communities under continuous aromatic hydrocarbon stress, with environmental selection dominating succession.

Microbial fuel cell-upflow biofilter coupling system for deep denitrification and power recovery: Efficiencies, bacterial succession and interactions

Zhi-Ling Li et al.

Summary: This study coupled a microbial fuel cell (MFC) with an up-flow denitrification biofilter (BF) and found that high denitrification efficiency and stable current output can be achieved under different carbon source concentrations. Coupling MFC significantly improved denitrification efficiency and organic carbon utilization, while also altering bacterial community structure and composition.

Nitrate shifted microenvironment: Driven aromatic-ring cleavage microbes and aromatic compounds precursor biodegradation during sludge composting

Mingzi Shi et al.

Summary: This study found that under the condition of nitrate addition, functional microbes involved in the aromatic compound degradation pathways were significantly enriched and had a negative correlation with aromatic humic substances. Microbial communities showed a preference for cooperation with aromatic-ring cleavage functional microbes. The composting microenvironment drove the activities of aromatic-ring cleavage functional microbes, leading to the biodegradation of complex aromatic compounds.

Electrical selection for planktonic sludge microbial community function and assembly

Aijie Wang et al.

Summary: The study found that electrostimulation can enhance the biotransformation of azo dyes by promoting the enrichment of azo dye degraders and electroactive bacteria in planktonic sludge microbial communities. Additionally, there were more microbial interactions and deterministic processes observed in the eHA microbial communities.

Bacterial and fungal assemblages and functions associated with biofilms differ between diverse types of plastic debris in a freshwater system

Longfei Wang et al.

Summary: Plastics in aquatic ecosystems easily attract diverse microbes, forming unique microbial communities known as the "plastisphere" that differ from surrounding water and other substrates. High-throughput sequencing revealed that the diversity and structure of bacterial communities varied on different types of plastics, while fungal communities showed no significant differences. Co-occurrence network analysis demonstrated that interactions between bacteria and fungi were less complex on microplastics compared to plastic sheets.

Soil potentials to resist continuous cropping obstacle: Three field cases

Ge Tan et al.

Summary: Continuous cropping obstacles can lead to decreases in soil nutrient content and bacterial diversity, with significant changes in key taxa abundances. Strategies such as crop rotation, intercropping, and the use of specialized bio-fertilizers and soil conditioners may help mitigate the negative effects of continuous cropping obstacles on soil-crop-microbial ecological systems.

Occurrence, impacts, and microbial transformation of 3-methylindole (skatole): A critical review

Qiao Ma et al.

Summary: Skatole is a notorious compound with fecal odor produced from tryptophan by anaerobic bacteria, reaching high environmental concentrations in animal wastes. Apart from odor nuisance, skatole has been shown to contribute to health issues in rumen animals and humans, as well as bacteriostatic effects. Further research is needed to fully understand its ecological and physiological significance.

The Effect of Initial Conditions with Aerobic Biological Treatment on Aniline Dyeing Wastewater

Huancheng Dong et al.

Summary: This study utilized aerobic biological treatment to treat aniline dyeing wastewater, finding that COD degradation rate increased with increasing biomass. The optimal operating conditions were a sludge concentration of 4 g/L, an initial pH value range of 7.0-8.0, and a salinity of 1.7%. Sphingopyxis was found to effectively biodegrade organic compounds in aniline dyeing wastewater.
