Air pollution aggravating COVID-19 lethality? Exploration in Asian cities using statistical models

Ankit Gupta et al.

Summary: The study found a positive correlation between air pollution and COVID-19 mortality, especially for individuals with long-term exposure to PM (2.5). Government agencies and health departments can reduce the risks associated with COVID-19 in highly polluted areas by promoting immunity-boosting supplements and appropriate masks.

Changes in air pollution during COVID-19 lockdown in Spain: A multi-city study

Alvaro Briz-Redon et al.

Summary: The COVID-19 pandemic has become one of the largest crises of the 21st Century, leading the Spanish Government to declare a nationwide lockdown. A study found that the short-term lockdown significantly reduced atmospheric levels of pollutants like NO2, while also leading to an increase in O-3 levels.

Sao Paulo's atmospheric pollution reduction and its social isolation effect, Brazil

Vinicius Possato Rosse et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the change in atmospheric pollution levels by NO and NO2 in Sao Paulo City during the social isolation period. Results showed an overall negative trend with decreasing concentrations at all stations, and a turning point close to the start of social isolation. The study also found that NO2 is a suitable surrogate for monitoring economic activities during social isolation periods.

Long-term exposure to air-pollution and COVID-19 mortality in England: A hierarchical spatial analysis

Garyfallos Konstantinoudis et al.

Summary: Recent studies have shown a potential link between long-term exposure to NO2 and PM2.5 and an increased risk of COVID-19 mortality. After adjusting for confounding and spatial autocorrelation, there was a 0.5% increase in COVID-19 mortality risk for every 1 μg/m(3) increase in NO2 and a 1.4% increase for PM2.5. The spatial relative risk at LSOA level revealed strong patterns, which may reflect the spread of the disease during the initial wave of the epidemic.

Effectiveness of non-pharmaceutical interventions on COVID-19 transmission in 190 countries from 23 January to 13 April 2020

Summary: The study shows that implementing mandatory mask, quarantine, distancing, and traffic restrictions can significantly reduce the reproduction number (Rt) of COVID-19. Social distancing and the simultaneous implementation of two or more NPIs appear to be associated with a greater decrease in the Rt of COVID-19.

The impact of COVID-19 on air quality levels in Portugal: A way to assess traffic contribution

Carla Gama et al.

Summary: The COVID-19 pandemic has had an indirect impact on air pollution in Portugal, with a greater reduction observed in NO2 concentrations compared to PM10. The reductions in NO2 concentrations were more significant in traffic and urban background sites, while rural stations showed smaller reductions. The study also raises concerns about the consistency of the incremental method in estimating traffic contribution to NO2 concentrations.

Summary: The systematic review analyzed the effects of NPHIs on the COVID-19 case growth rate, death growth rate, ICU admission, and reproduction number. Results showed that the adoption of NPHIs led to decreases in daily case growth rates, death growth rates, and the COVID-19 reproduction number, as well as a decrease in COVID-19 daily ICU admission.

The impact of outdoor air pollution on COVID-19: a review of evidence from in vitro, animal, and human studies

Thomas Bourdrel et al.

Summary: Studies suggest that air pollution may contribute to the COVID-19 pandemic, but the specific links are still unclear. Epidemiological investigations have linked various air pollutants to COVID-19 morbidity and mortality, but there are limitations. Air pollution may increase COVID-19 severity and lethality through impacts on chronic diseases and immune response, facilitating viral penetration and replication. Further epidemiological studies and experimental research are needed to better understand the impact of air pollution on COVID-19.

Social distancing compliance: A video observational analysis

Evelien M. Hoeben et al.

Summary: The study shows that compliance with the 1.5-meter distance directives is short-lived and correlates with the number of people on the street and compliance with stay-at-home directives. The findings suggest that keep-distance directives may work best in combination with stay-at-home directives and place-specific crowd-control strategies.

How mobility restrictions policy and atmospheric conditions impacted air quality in the State of Sao Paulo during the COVID-19 outbreak

A. P. Rudke et al.

Summary: The study revealed that while certain regions saw improvements in air quality after the implementation of mobility restrictions, overall, there was no significant enhancement in air quality in most parts of Sao Paulo. The dynamics of the atmosphere play a crucial role in influencing pollutant concentration variability.

Examining socio-economic factors to understand the hospital case fatality rates of COVID-19 in the city of sao Paulo, Brazil

Camila Lorenz et al.

Summary: The study found higher hospital case fatality rates for men and individuals aged >= 60 years in relation to coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). Per capita income was identified as a significant factor negatively associated with COVID-19 HCFRs. Spatial analysis of these methods and disparities in COVID-19 outcomes may aid in developing policies for at-risk populations in geographically defined areas.
