Dissolved Organic Matter Mitigates the Acute Toxicity of Thulium to Hyalella azteca but Ca, Mg and Na Do Not

Alexandria Loveridge et al.

Summary: The demand for rare earth elements (REEs) is increasing, leading to environmental exposure concerns. This study evaluated the acute toxicity of Thulium (Tm) to Hyalella azteca and the potential for toxicity modification by dissolved organic matter (DOM) and certain cations (Ca2+, Mg2+, Na+). Results showed that Tm toxicity was not affected by cationic competition, while DOM provided significant protection against Tm toxicity. This research contributes to understanding Tm toxicity and the importance of considering dissolved organic matter in assessing the environmental risk of REEs.

Free Eu(III) Determination by Donnan Membrane Technique with Electrochemical Detection: Implementation and Evaluation

Noemie Janot et al.

Summary: The study developed an analytical method to determine free concentrations of Europium (Eu(III)) in natural waters. By using the Donnan membrane technique and cathodic stripping voltammetry, different forms of Europium were effectively detected and quantified, providing a new analytical approach for studying Europium in environmental water samples.

Modeling rare earth elements binding to humic acids with model VII

Remi Marsac et al.

Summary: This study aims to develop a numerical predictive model for REE speciation in various environments to help predict their behavior and potential toxic effects. The predictive capabilities of Model VII were demonstrated by successfully modeling the effects of different cations and carbonates on REE-HA binding, suggesting its applicability to a wide range of physico-chemical conditions.
