Legacy and alternative per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances in a subtropical marine food web from the Beibu Gulf, South China: Fate, trophic transfer and health risk assessment

Chang-Gui Pan et al.

Summary: The study investigated the occurrence, bioaccumulation, and trophic magnification of legacy and alternative PFAS in subtropical marine food webs in the Beibu Gulf, South China. The results showed that most PFAS exhibited low bioaccumulation levels, with only a few substances showing trophic magnification. Overall, the risk of PFAS exposure through consumption of marine organisms was found to be relatively low.

A critical review of modeling Poly- and Perfluoroalkyl Substances (PFAS) in the soil-water environment

Matthew W. Sima et al.

Summary: This review summarizes recent developments in PFAS modeling for various chemical, physical, and biological processes, including sorption, volatilization, degradation, bioaccumulation, and transport. It is found that PFAS transport in the soil-water environment is influenced by various physical, chemical, and biological processes, highlighting the importance of accurate model parameters to predict the fate and remediation efficiency of PFAS.

Bioaccumulation of Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) in a tropical estuarine food web

Daniele A. Miranda et al.

Summary: The bioaccumulation of PFASs in a tropical mangrove food web in Bahia, Brazil was investigated. Different accumulation patterns of PFASs were observed among various trophic positions, with some long-chain PFCAs showing apparent biodilution through the food chain. This study provides new insights into the behavior of PFASs in a tropical ecosystem.

Chronic effects and thresholds for estuarine and marine benthic organism exposure to perfluorooctane sulfonic acid (PFOS)-contaminated sediments: Influence of organic carbon and exposure routes

Stuart L. Simpson et al.

Summary: Guideline values for PFOS in estuarine/marine sediments were derived based on water quality guideline values and data on toxicity to benthic biota. The study found that toxicity of PFOS was mainly attributed to dissolved exposure rather than dietary exposure. Field-collected sediment samples generally had PFOS levels below the screening value.
