Children's exposure to polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAHs): a review on urinary 1-hydroxypyrene and associated health effects

Nur Hazirah Hisamuddin et al.

Summary: This article reviewed studies on children's exposure to PAHs in the environment and assessed the level of urinary 1-OHP as a biomarker. The review also discussed the potential health effects of increased 1-OHP in children and the influence of genetic polymorphism on its level. The findings showed that children in urban areas and those living near industrial and polluted areas have higher exposure to PAHs, as indicated by higher levels of urinary 1-OHP. Urinary 1-OHP is a reliable biomarker for evaluating genotoxic effects, oxidative stress, and inflammation caused by PAHs exposure.

Pollution characteristics, mechanism of toxicity and health effects of the ultrafine particles in the indoor environment: Current status and future perspectives

Muhammad Ubaid Ali et al.

Summary: Ultrafine particles (UFPs) are becoming the most dominant and abundant particulate matter, with increased human exposure. Due to their small size, UFPs have significant health impacts, but knowledge about them is still lacking. Inhalation is the main exposure route, and inhaled UFPs can cause various adverse health effects.

Urinary monohydroxylated polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in the general population from 26 provincial capital cities in China: Levels, influencing factors, and health risks

Senyuan Huang et al.

Summary: This study on PAH exposure levels and influencing factors in China found that PAHs have adverse health effects, associated with sampling time, living habits, and regional economic development and energy consumption imbalances. The study also found smoking to be the main factor correlated with PAH concentrations, and inhalation and diet to be the main exposure routes. Naphthalene and phenanthrene were identified as possibly related to lung cancer risk in the Chinese population.

Benzo[a]pyrene (BaP) metabolites predominant in human plasma following escalating oral micro-dosing with [14C]-BaP

Monica L. Vermillion Maier et al.

Summary: Benzo[a]pyrene (BaP) is a known human carcinogen formed by incomplete combustion of organic materials. This study examined the uptake, metabolism, and elimination of [C-14]-BaP in human plasma, revealing marked inter-individual variability in plasma pharmacokinetics at environmentally relevant concentrations.

The association between urinary metabolites of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and cardiovascular diseases and blood pressure: a systematic review and meta-analysis of observational studies

Atieh Mirzababaei et al.

Summary: This meta-analysis examined the association between urinary metabolites of PAHs and cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) and blood pressure in adults, finding a significant positive association between all types of urinary metabolites of PAHs and blood pressure. However, there was no significant association between any urinary metabolite of PAH and coronary heart disease (CHD). Overall, the study suggests that different metabolites of PAHs are associated with an increased risk of CVD and HTN, indicating a need for further research to confirm these findings, including randomized clinical trials.

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon contamination along roads based on levels on vehicle window films

Weiwei Zhang et al.

Summary: This study investigated the long-term contamination of PAHs in vehicles and along roads by collecting organic films from vehicle windows in Shanghai, China, and converting them to airborne PAH concentrations. The results revealed significant carcinogenic risks to drivers and passengers exposed to PAHs along roads, especially through ingestion processes, with airborne PAH concentrations along roads ranging from 0.83 to 3.37 μg m(-3). Comparisons of PAHs between roads and shipping lanes were also conducted to delineate vehicular and shipping PAH inventories.

Empirical assessment of rockfall and debris flow risk along the Karakoram Highway, Pakistan

Sajid Ali et al.

Summary: The study focused on a 200 km long section of the Karakoram Highway, from Besham to Chilas, where landslides were found to be frequent, often triggered by torrential rain during Monsoon and Westerlies, leading to highway blockades. Remote sensing techniques were used to identify potential hazardous sites and assess risks, resulting in the classification of four zones with different risk levels based on normalized scores from each site.

Benchmark dose analysis for PAHs hydroxyl metabolites in urine based on mitochondrial damage of peripheral blood leucocytes in coke oven workers in China

Shuai Cheng et al.

Summary: This study found that occupational exposure to polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in coke oven plant workers was associated with lower mitochondrial DNA copy number compared to the control group. Furthermore, there was a dose-response relationship between 1-hydroxypyrene and 3-hydroxyphenanthrene exposure and mitochondrial DNA damage. The benchmark dose lower confidence limits of these PAHs can be used as a reference to establish biological limits for occupational exposure.
