Biochar promotes arsenic sequestration on iron plaques and cell walls in rice roots

Min Xu et al.

Summary: The addition of maize straw-derived biochar increased the concentrations of iron and arsenic in pore water, promoting their accumulation in roots and enhancing rice biomass. Biochar also improved rice tolerance to arsenic toxicity by increasing root TTC reductive intensity, reducing H2O2 concentration, and promoting iron plaque formation. Furthermore, biochar increased crystalline iron formation on the root surface and iron content in the cell wall, facilitating arsenic sequestration.

A novel mechanism study of microplastic and As co-contamination on indica rice (Oryza sativa L.)

Youming Dong et al.

Summary: This study explored the effects and mechanisms of PSMP and PTFE microplastics on As bioavailability in paddy soil. PSMP and PTFE inhibited root activity and reduced the abundance of certain bacteria, leading to decreased iron plaques on root surfaces and inhibited As uptake by rice. Additionally, PSMP and PTFE decreased hemoglobin content and inhibited the activities of starch synthase and pyrophosphorylase in rice grains, resulting in reduced starch accumulation and biomass. Ultimately, the physiological toxicity and adverse effects of PSMP, PTFE, and As led to decreased rice yield in co-contaminated soil.

Microbial investigations of new hydrogel-biochar composites as soil amendments for simultaneous nitrogen-use improvement and heavy metal immobilization

Lixun Zhang et al.

Summary: The study introduces a new soil amendment, PAA/CTS/BC, which simultaneously improves nitrogen cycling and immobilizes heavy metals in soil. The amendment promotes soil ammonium retention, reduces nitrate accumulation, nitrous oxide emission, and ammonia volatilization during rice cultivation. It also significantly decreases the availability of various heavy metals in the soil, altering the structure and function of soil microbial communities, leading to a complex and function-specific network of microbial communities. The findings suggest a promising strategy for crop production improvement, pollution control, and climate change mitigation.

Simultaneous reduction in cadmium and arsenic accumulation in rice (Oryza sativa L.) by iron/iron-manganese modified sepiolite

Sijiang Zhou et al.

Summary: The modification of sepiolite with ferric nitrate or iron-manganese oxide enhanced its ability to reduce both Cd and As accumulation in rice. The results showed that the modified sepiolites (NIMS and FMS) had larger specific surface areas than regular sepiolite (SEP), leading to better efficiency in reducing Cd and As content in brown rice. XPS analysis revealed that FMS enhanced the adsorption and co-precipitation of Cd, and facilitated the oxidation of As(III) to As(V). Additionally, both NIMS and FMS treatments improved soil conditions and limited the transfer of As to roots, showing promise for use in reducing Cd and As accumulation in rice.

Hermes Perez-Hernandez et al.

Summary: The study found that TiO2 nanoparticles inhibited the growth of maize plants in alkaline soil by affecting plant length and root size, while the impact on plants in acid soil was minimal. Additionally, a higher accumulation of titanium was found in maize tissues grown in alkaline soil compared to those in acid soil. Increasing TiO2 nanoparticles in soil organic matter led to higher Ti concentrations, which in turn harmed the survival and weight of terrestrial isopods.
