Application of spherical-rod float image velocimetry for evaluating high flow rate in mountain rivers

Seung Sook Shin et al.

Summary: Spherical-rod float image velocimetry (SFIV) is a convenient technique that combines the positive functions of rod float velocimetry (RFV) and large-scale particle image velocimetry (LSPIV) for measuring high flow rates in mountain rivers. The method utilizes a sphere as a floating tracer for LSPIV, allowing for accurate velocity measurements in complex flow conditions. The results show that SFIV is highly applicable in mountain rivers, providing accurate depth-reflecting velocities despite challenging weather conditions and topographic features.

Portable unmanned surface vehicle that automatically measures flow velocity and direction in rivers

M. Sanjou et al.

Summary: An automatic measurement system for flow velocity and direction in natural rivers was developed using an autonomously controlled unmanned surface vehicle (USV). The system underwent over 20 indoor tests under different hydraulic conditions and field tests to examine its reliability and accuracy. Results showed that the USV possesses sufficient ability to meet practical performance requirements for flow measurement in a calm river with approximately 1 m/s velocity.

Large-Scale Particle Image Velocimetry to Measure Streamflow from Videos Recorded from Unmanned Aerial Vehicle and Fixed Imaging System

Wen-Cheng Liu et al.

Summary: The large-scale particle image velocimetry (LSPIV) captured by a UAV and a terrestrial fixed station provides an effective method for measuring river surface velocity. Under low flow conditions, the accuracy of surface velocity measurements using LSPIV from a UAV is higher than that from a terrestrial fixed station. Optimal flight heights and parameter settings can enhance the accuracy of velocity measurements.
