Hydrogeochemical and health risk evaluation of arsenic in shallow and deep aquifers along the different floodplains of Punjab, Pakistan

Natasha et al.

Summary: This study investigated the distribution, behavior, and health risk of arsenic in shallow and deep aquifers along the floodplains of three rivers in Punjab, Pakistan. It found higher arsenic concentrations in deep wells and potential carcinogenic and non-carcinogenic risks in groundwater across all areas. The study also suggested a potential role of Fe oxide mineral phases in arsenic mobilization in these aquifer environments.

A probabilistic-deterministic analysis of human health risk related to the exposure to potentially toxic elements in groundwater of Urmia coastal aquifer (NW of Iran) with a special focus on arsenic speciation and temporal variation

Nassim Sohrabi et al.

Summary: This study evaluated human health risks related to groundwater contamination with toxic elements in the Urmia aquifer using multivariate statistics and probabilistic risk estimation approaches. It found that arsenic (As) posed the most significant health risk, with potential non-carcinogenic effects. Mitigation measures are necessary to safeguard public health from the impacts of toxic element contamination.

Spatiotemporal variation of nitrate concentrations in soil and groundwater of an intensely polluted agricultural area

Kei Nakagawa et al.

Summary: Nitrate pollution in groundwater is a common issue worldwide, making it challenging to identify main pollution sources due to their diffuse nature. A novel methodology was presented for analyzing groundwater samples collected in a polluted area, showing a strong relationship between soil and groundwater nitrate concentrations.

Transgenerational effects in DNA methylation, genotoxicity and reproductive phenotype by chronic arsenic exposure

Lydia Enith Nava-Rivera et al.

Summary: Chronic exposure to arsenic can lead to genotoxic damage, different DNA methylation patterns, alterations in physical and reproductive parameters, aberrant morphological changes in the ovaries and testicles, and a decrease in sperm quality in rats across multiple generations. This suggests that parental exposure to arsenic may cause transgenerational genotoxicity and changes in global DNA methylation, potentially affecting reproductive health in rats. Recent studies also indicate that disruptions in early life can have implications for the health of future generations.

Anthropogenic depletion of Iran's aquifers

Roohollah Noori et al.

Summary: Iran faces severe depletion and salinity issues in its groundwater resources, with an increase in extraction points but a decrease in annual withdrawal. Over-extraction of nonrenewable water leads to declining groundwater levels and increased salinity hazard.

Health risks from groundwater arsenic on residents in northern China coal-rich region

Yuan Li et al.

Summary: Based on a ten-year investigation using Kriging interpolation, it was found that the groundwater arsenic concentrations in Shanxi Province were decreasing over time, with high-risk areas mainly concentrated in the northern and middle basin regions. The forecasted high-risk areas in coal mining regions were larger than those in non-coal mining areas, indicating greater vulnerability of residents living around coal mining areas to groundwater arsenic exposure.

Summary: Beach sediments collected along Atlantic Ocean of Cameroon were geochemically analysed using ICP-MS techniques to determine their contamination of heavy metal and related ecological risks. Results showed moderate contamination of the study sediments by metal, with risks ranging from low to moderate.
