Gene polymorphism of chalcone isomerase influence the accumulation of flavonoids in licorice (Glycyrrhizaspp.)

Summary: Licorice has been used in traditional Chinese medicine for over 2000 years. This study analyzed the gene polymorphism of CHI and found that CHI-1 is conducive to flavonoid biosynthesis. The results will provide a basis for understanding the function of CHI and further molecular breeding of high-quality licorice.

Summary: Plant in vitro cultures, including hairy roots, are used for controlled production of valuable natural products, such as triterpenoids and sterols. Sterols and triterpenoids have distinct functions and the 2,3-oxidosqualene cyclization step is considered a branch point between primary and secondary metabolism. Studies show that unconstrained biosynthesis of triterpenoids may occur when sterol formation is already satisfied.

Summary: The study found that Conyza blinii exhibits improved growth and photosynthetic activity under specific intensity of UV-B radiation, attributed to enhanced antioxidant capacity and increased synthesis of the characteristic diterpene blinin. Additionally, RNA sequencing analysis revealed upregulation of key enzyme genes in blinin synthesis pathway and identified terpene transporter genes that may play a role in blinin transport in response to UV-B exposure.
