Estimation of community-wide multi-chemical exposure via water-based chemical mining: Key research gaps drawn from a comprehensive multi-biomarker multi-city dataset

Barbara Kasprzyk-Hordern et al.

Summary: This paper explores the potential of chemical mining of wastewater to search for markers of community-wide exposure to harmful chemicals, with a focus on five contrasting towns/cities in the South-West UK. It found that only metabolism data accounting for phase two metabolism provided correct estimates of pharmaceutical intake, and that using parent compounds as XCRs overestimated exposure due to the inclusion of unused drugs.
