Movement of synthetic organic compounds in the food web after the introduction of invasive quagga mussels (Dreissena bugensis) in Lake Mead, Nevada and Arizona, USA

Steven Goodbred et al.

Summary: The study assessed the distribution of SOCs in the food web of Lake Mead, Nevada/Arizona, USA and found that the introduction of invasive quagga mussels influenced this distribution. It was observed that quagga mussel growth has shifted a considerable portion of the SOC mass from the pelagic to the benthic environments, resulting in increased risk of SOC exposure for benthic species.

Beyond bulk δ15N: Combining a suite of stable isotopic measures improves the resolution of the food webs mediating contaminant signals across space, time and communities

Kyle H. Elliott et al.

Summary: The study examined the relationship between trophic position of predators in different aquatic systems and their reflection of contamination in the food chain. It found that calculating trophic position using amino acid-specific values is more accurate than using bulk values, which helps assess the risk to top predators.

Synthetic musks in surface water and fish from the rivers in India: Seasonal distribution and toxicological risk assessment

Krishnamoorthi Vimalkumar et al.

Summary: The study investigated the occurrence and fate of synthetic musks in three major rivers in Tamil Nadu, India, finding the presence of SMs in both surface water and fish samples. Despite the low detection frequency, some rivers were contaminated with high concentrations of synthetic musks.

Distribution of microcystins in environmental multimedia and their bioaccumulation characteristics in marine benthic organisms in the Geum River Estuary, South Korea

Mungi Kim et al.

Summary: The study investigated the spatio-temporal distributions and bioaccumulation characteristics of freshwater cyanobacterial toxins, such as microcystins (MCs), in the Geum River Estuary of South Korea during summer. Seasonal variation in phytoplankton communities and strong correlations between MC concentrations and water temperature, chlorophyll a, and cyanobacterial density were observed. Dissolved MCs remained longer and were more widely distributed in coastal environments compared to particulate MCs, with the phase shift of MCs occurring in the estuary. Overall, the study enhances understanding of the distribution, transport, fate, and bioaccumulation of MCs in estuarine and coastal environments.

Occurrence and Sources of Synthetic Musk Fragrances in the Sewage Treatment Plants and the Han River, Korea

Ju-Hee Hong et al.

Summary: The study revealed that synthetic musk fragrances (SMFs) in the Han River and its tributaries in Seoul, Korea mainly originate from personal care products and sewage effluents containing untreated SMFs. The sewage treatment plants showed high removal efficiencies for SMFs, with the highest concentrations observed near the plants in the tributaries.

Bioaccumulation and trophodynamics of cyclic methylsiloxanes in the food web of a large subtropical lake in China

Ying He et al.

Summary: The study found that the transfer of cyclic methylsiloxanes in aquatic food webs is complex, with tissue-specific distribution in organisms affecting biomagnification and trophodynamics. Further research is needed to investigate methylsiloxanes in various species and their dynamics in different food webs.
