Measuring urinary concentrations of neonicotinoid insecticides by modified solid-phase extraction-ultrahigh performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry: Application to human exposure and risk assessment

Wenli Zhou et al.

Summary: A study developed a method to quantify neonicotinoids in urine and found widespread exposure among adolescents in Chongqing, Southwest China. However, based on reference values, the health risks from exposure to neonicotinoids were low.

Cumulative exposure assessment of neonicotinoids and an investigation into their intake-related factors in young children in Japan

Naoko Oya et al.

Summary: This study investigated the exposure levels and sources of neonicotinoids (NEO) in young Japanese children, finding that food intake had a significant impact on exposure levels, while the use of mosquito coils and insect repellents was associated with increased urinary NEO levels. Mothers who were concerned about their child's nutritional balance were able to reduce the risk of exposure to NEOs.

Occurrence of neonicotinoid insecticides and their metabolites in tooth samples collected from south China: Associations with periodontitis

Nan Zhang et al.

Summary: NEOs are widely used in agricultural production processes in China and worldwide, with concerns growing over their potential toxicity to nontarget organisms. This study measured levels of parent NEOs and metabolites in tooth samples collected from South China, finding frequent detection of NEOs in the samples, gender-related differences in NEO levels, and associations between NEO exposure and periodontitis. The study suggests that NEO levels are associated with increased odds of prevalent periodontitis.

A nationwide study of occurrence and exposure assessment of neonicotinoid insecticides and their metabolites in drinking water of China

Gaga Mahai et al.

Summary: This study investigated the contamination status of neonicotinoid insecticides (NNIs) and their metabolites in drinking water across China, finding variations in concentrations and patterns of NNIs in different regions, mainly influenced by differences in crop types and pesticide usage. Some drinking water samples exceeded the acceptable value recommended by the European Union, posing potential human health risks.

Profiles of neonicotinoid insecticides and their metabolites in paired saliva and periodontal blood samples in human from South China: Association with oxidative stress markers

Hua Zhang et al.

Summary: This study revealed the widespread presence of NEOs and their metabolites in paired saliva and periodontal blood samples from South China, with males displaying lower levels compared to females. The S/PB ratios of NEOs and their metabolites were higher than 1, indicating easy excretion via saliva. Additionally, exposure to NEOs and their metabolites was associated with oxidative stress as indicated by the positive correlations with 8-OHdG concentrations in saliva and periodontal blood.

Fetal cranial growth trajectories are associated with growth and neurodevelopment at 2 years of age: INTERBIO-21st Fetal Study

Jose Villar et al.

Summary: This study identified five fetal cranial growth trajectories associated with specific neurodevelopmental, behavioral, visual, and growth outcomes, predominantly focusing on the maturation of cognitive, language, and visual skills. Further research should explore the potential for preventive interventions during pregnancy to improve infant neurodevelopmental outcomes before the critical window of opportunity that precedes the divergence of growth at 20-25 weeks' gestation.

Profiles of neonicotinoid insecticides and characteristic metabolites in paired urine and blood samples: Partitioning between urine and blood and implications for human exposure

Miaomiao Xu et al.

Summary: This study analyzed NEOs and their metabolites in paired urine and blood samples collected from young adults in China. The results showed widespread detection of NEOs and their metabolites in both urine and blood samples, with gender-related differences in concentrations. Urinary levels were found to be good predictors of human exposure to NEOs and their metabolites.
