Influence of specimen size on the mechanical properties of microlattices obtained by selective laser melting

Matteo Gavazzoni et al.

Summary: A detailed study of compression tests on lattice structures obtained by selective laser melting with AlSi7Mg powder was conducted, investigating the effect of different cell topologies on the mechanical response. While specimen size had influence on maximum stress and failure mechanism, it did not significantly affect elastic modulus and yielding stress. Test results were compared with simulation results, showing good prediction accuracy in terms of elastic modulus and yielding stress.

The role of node fillet, unit-cell size and strut orientation on the fatigue strength of Ti-6Al-4V lattice materials additively manufactured via laser powder bed fusion

Summary: The study on L-PBF Ti-6Al-4 V cubic lattice specimens revealed that smoothing the strut fillets at their node improves fatigue performance, and the printing direction also affects fatigue strength and failure behavior.

Multiaxial static strength of a 3D printed metallic lattice structure exhibiting brittle behavior

Matteo Gavazzoni et al.

Summary: This paper focuses on numerically predicting the multiaxial static strength of lattice structures made of AlSi10Mg aluminum alloy printed with Selective Laser Melting. The Gurson-Tveergard-Needleman damage model is used to predict failure in numerical simulations, which is validated through static tests. The study combines the damage model with computational micromechanics to investigate the effective multiaxial strength of lattice material.

Investigating the microstructure and mechanical behaviour of simulant lava-like fuel containing materials from the Chernobyl reactor unit 4 meltdown

C. Paraskevoulakos et al.

Summary: The decommissioning of Chernobyl nuclear reactor Unit 4 is a top priority for the global community. Understanding the behavior of hazardous materials formed during the accident is crucial. A combined methodology using Hertzian indentation, synchrotron X-ray tomography, and digital volume correlation (DVC) was adopted to estimate the mechanical properties of these materials.

Architected cellular materials: A review on their mechanical properties towards fatigue-tolerant design and fabrication

M. Benedetti et al.

Summary: Metal additive manufacturing is now a mature technology that is being used to produce high-performance parts, including mission-critical components. The intentional design of porous metal structures, such as cellular or lattice structures, offers advantages in terms of specific mechanical or performance characteristics. While concerns over structural integrity remain, improvements in the manufacturing processes are leading to better fatigue properties for additively manufactured cellular structures.

Deformation mechanisms and mechanical performances of architected mechanical metamaterials with gyroid topologies: Synchrotron X-ray radiation in-situ compression experiments and 3D image based finite element analysis

Wenxia Hu et al.

Summary: Synchrotron radiation X-ray micro-computed tomography (SR-μCT) is a powerful non-destructive 3D imaging technique used to characterize defects in advanced materials and structures at micro- and nano-scales. This study investigates the internal features and damage evolution of mechanical metamaterials manufactured with projection micro litho stereo exposure (PμLSE) using SR-μCT 3D imaging techniques and in-situ compression experiments. The failure process of periodic architected mechanical metamaterials under compression loading is characterized by curved surface fracture and buckling. A reconstructed geometrical model based on SR-μCT 3D tomography images is proposed to analyze the relationship between the manufactured sample and mechanical behavior, with in-situ experiments and numerical simulation results compared for verification.
