Reconstruction of Daylight Spectral Power Distribution Based on Correlated Color Temperature: A Comparative Study between the CIE Approach and Localized Procedures in Assessing Non-image Forming Effects

Aicha Diakite-Kortlever et al.

Summary: This study examines the reconstruction accuracy of the spectral power distribution (SPD) of daylight and compares different reconstruction procedures. The results show that a localized procedure outperforms the CIE method in terms of accuracy. However, the improvement in reconstruction accuracy does not affect the assessment of non-image forming (NIF) effects. This implies that cost-effective sensors and simplified representation methods can be used for NIF purposes.

Recommendations for daytime, evening, and nighttime indoor light exposure to best support physiology, sleep, and wakefulness in healthy adults

Timothy M. Brown et al.

Summary: Ocular light exposure has significant effects on human health and well-being, affecting circadian rhythms, sleep, neuroendocrine and cognitive functions. Advances in understanding the mechanisms and emerging lighting technologies allow for the adjustment of lighting to promote optimal physical and mental health and performance. A new international standard provides a way to quantify the influence of light on retinal neurons, and this report provides lighting recommendations based on scientific consensus, with a focus on easily measured quantities.

The Lighting Environment, Its Metrology, and Non-visual Responses

Luc J. M. Schlangen et al.

Summary: International standard CIE S 026:2018 provides a method for characterizing light exposures related to non-visual photoreception and responses for lighting professionals and field researchers in chronobiology. The standard defines five spectral sensitivity functions to describe how optical radiation stimulates alpha-opic retinal photoreceptor classes contributing to non-visual effects of light in humans. The recent publication of an alpha-opic toolbox allows for calculation of alpha-opic metrology quantities and ratios based on different light sources.

Should We Re-think Regulations and Standards for Lighting at Workplaces? A Practice Review on Existing Lighting Recommendations

Oliver Stefani et al.

Summary: Nowadays lighting projects often incorporate temporal variations of light, both spectrally and in terms of intensity, to consider non-visual effects on people. However, there are currently no specific regulations in place. Compliance with common lighting standards that focus on visual aspects often results in minimal non-visually effective light reaching the eye. This review confronts existing regulations on visual lighting aspects with new recommendations on non-visual effects, ultimately concluding with lighting recommendations that address both aspects.

Forecast accuracy of existing luminance-related spectral sky models and their practical implications for the assessment of the non-image-forming effectiveness of daylight

A. K. Diakite-Kortlever et al.

Summary: This paper analyzes the forecast accuracy of current state-of-the-art, data-driven, spectral sky models. The results show that spectral sky models play an important role in predicting non-image-forming effects, but there is an issue of underestimation in the assumption of the CIE standard illuminant D65.
