Sticky layers affect oil transport through the nanopores of realistic shale kerogen

Sen Wang et al.

Summary: This study focuses on the adsorption and pressure-driven flow behavior of multicomponent hydrocarbon mixtures through realistic shale kerogen nanopores, revealing a parabolic velocity profile of hydrocarbons only in the central pore and the formation of a sticky layer on the kerogen surface. The existence of the sticky layer decreases the mobilized cross-sectional area of the kerogen pore, dramatically impeding the transport capability of shale oil.

Construction of molecular structure model of Tunlan coal and its microscopic physicochemical mechanism

Shuo Zhang et al.

Summary: The physicochemical structure of coal plays a crucial role in understanding the physiochemical properties and occurrence of coalbed methane. Through various analytical techniques, a stable three-dimensional molecular structure model of coal was established to study its physicochemical responses at a molecular level. It was found that angle and torsion energies in nanopore structure, as well as electrostatic energy in non-bond energy, are key factors in maintaining the stability and structure of coal pores. The dissolution of low molecular weight compounds can lead to changes in pore volume and specific surface area, with different effects observed in early and later dissolution stages. The distribution of total pore structure in coal depends on the changes in basic structure units, such as stacking height and diameter, influencing the overall pore characteristics.

Flow behaviors of shale oil in kerogen slit by molecular dynamics simulation

Jie Liu et al.

Summary: This study investigates the flow behavior of multicomponent shale oil in realistic kerogen channels using molecular dynamic simulation. The results show that the flow of shale oil exhibits peristaltic behavior due to the influence of kerogen branched chains. The heavy component forms adsorbed layers, while asphaltene molecules cluster in bulk phase. Increasing driving force and temperature enhance shale oil flow.

Fracture variation in high-rank coal induced by hydraulic fracturing using X-ray computer tomography and digital volume correlation

Xianglong Wang et al.

Summary: This study conducted a laboratory simulation of hydraulic fracturing in coal and used X-ray computer tomography (CT) and digital volume correlation (DVC) to analyze and quantify the changes in fractures induced by hydraulic fracturing. The results showed that hydraulic fracturing increased the aperture, volume, and surface area of fractures in coal, and simplified their morphology. The study also revealed the significant influence range and connectivity of fractures caused by hydraulic fracturing.

Molecular Investigation on the Displacement Characteristics of CH4 by CO2, N2 and Their Mixture in a Composite Shale Model

Liang Gong et al.

Summary: The study utilized molecular simulations to investigate the displacement characteristics of CH4 by different injection gases in shale reservoirs. Results showed that injection pressure and formation temperature influenced the displacement capacity of CH4 by CO2, while a synergistic effect was observed when CO2 and N-2 were simultaneously injected. This research provides guidance for the displacement exploitation of shale gas using injection gases.

Molecular insights into carbon dioxide enhanced multi-component shale gas recovery and its sequestration in realistic kerogen

Sen Wang et al.

Summary: This study investigates the competitive adsorption between CO2 and hydrocarbon components in shales, as well as the recovery mechanisms of CO2 huff-n-puff in kerogenic circular nanopores. The study reveals that different pore geometries and compositions significantly impact gas adsorption and recovery behaviors, highlighting the importance of using realistic shale kerogen models. Additionally, increasing pore size improves gas recovery during pressure drawdown but limits the effectiveness of CO2 injection, leading to an overall increase in gas recovery and CO2 sequestration efficiency.

Diffusion characteristics of methane in various rank coals and the control mechanism

Jiwei Yan et al.

Summary: The methane diffusion behavior in coals was investigated in this study, with experiments conducted on different rank coal samples to analyze pore size distribution and gas adsorption-diffusion behavior. The Langmuir effective diffusion coefficient and its influencing factors were studied, showing that the diffusion coefficient generally rises with pressure and the Langmuir volume increases with R-o, R-m values. Moisture content and coal rank affect gas diffusion differently, with a more significant influence in medium-rank coals.

Molecular simulation of N2 and CO2 injection into a coal model containing adsorbed methane at different temperatures

Yang Bai et al.

Summary: The study found that CO2 and N-2 primarily displace methane gas by occupying adsorption sites, leading to a lower total energy in the CH4-CO2 model. With an increase in temperature, the concentration and motion velocity of CH4 in the vacuum layer increased, with a reduction in the diffusion activation energy of CH4 in different models by 20.53% under conditions of injecting CO2.

Comparisons of Methane Adsorption/Desorption, Diffusion Behaviors on Intact Coals and Deformed Coals: Based on Experimental Analysis and Isosteric Heat of Adsorption

Kun Zhang et al.

Summary: The isosteric heat of adsorption is a key parameter for assessing the thermodynamic properties of gas adsorption and migration in coals. Results from isotherm experiments show that Langmuir V-L in coal is dependent on temperature and coal structures, and adsorption heat is higher in intact coals than in deformed coals. Additionally, diffusion coefficients decrease with depressurization processes, and gas diffusion mainly occurs in different pore sizes corresponding to Fick's, transitional, and Knudsen diffusion. The high initial diffusion coefficient in deformed coals is related to the low isosteric heat of adsorption.

Release of methane from nanochannels through displacement using CO2

Xu Cheng et al.

Summary: In this study, the release of methane in quartz nanochannels using carbon dioxide displacement was investigated through molecular dynamics simulations and theoretical analysis. The results showed that both the pressure of CO2 and the size of the channels influenced the release percentage of methane, which increased with higher CO2 pressure and larger channel diameter. Theoretical predictions based on the kinetic energy of methane and energy barriers inside the channels were in good agreement with the MD simulations.
