Hardness Enhancement of Carbonate Rocks by Formation of Smithsonite and Fluorite

Yevgeniy Samarkin et al.

Summary: Carbonate rock strengthening techniques have been widely used in cultural heritage preservation, and there is a growing interest in applying these techniques in the oil and gas sector. This study found that NaF and ZnSO4 treatments can significantly improve the hardness of carbonate rocks, making them potential agents for various industrial applications such as solving conductivity reduction problems in hydraulic fractures.

Chelating Agents as Acid-Fracturing Fluids: Experimental and Modeling Studies

Zeeshan Tariq et al.

Summary: The study compared the performance of different chelating agents in improving fracture conductivity in carbonate reservoirs, finding that treatments with EDTA and GLDA had comparable outcomes to HCl acid in terms of fracture conductivity, with less reduction in rock strength. This could lead to better long-term sustainable fracture conductivity. The connectivity between fracture and rock matrix was improved, and field-scale simulations showed that EDTA and GLDA agents had lower dissolution magnitudes compared to HCl acid, but could etch a larger percentage of the created fracture length.

Comparative Study of Fracture Conductivity in Various Carbonate Rocks Treated with GLDA Chelating Agent and HCl Acid

Zeeshan Tariq et al.

Summary: This study investigated the application of acid fracturing fluids in different carbonate formations and found that rock hardness and surface roughness significantly impact fracture conductivity. Acid reactivity and rock type also play a key role in determining the generated rock roughness and resulting conductivity levels.

Improving long-term hydraulic fracture conductivity by alteration of rock minerals

Mahmoud Desouky et al.

Summary: The study aims to increase rock strength through mineralogical alteration to sustain long-term fracture conductivity. Experimental results show that substituting calcium with zinc in calcite crystals on limestone surfaces significantly increases rock hardness. Additionally, SEM, XRF, XPS, and FIB-SEM experiments were conducted to understand the hardening mechanism, shedding light on the formation process of the smithsonite layer covering the sample surfaces.

Summary: This study proposes the use of THEOS and MeTHEOS as precursors for silicon-based consolidants and hydrophobic formulations, which have high water solubility and stability, and are compatible with natural polysaccharides. The water-soluble silanes were used as a basis, leading to satisfactory results in terms of mechanical properties and compatibility with the studied stones.

Preliminary Studies on the Proppant Embedment in Baltic Basin Shale Rock

Mateusz Maslowski et al.

Summary: This paper presents experiments on proppant embedment phenomenon on shale rock from the Baltic Basin, an unconventional gas deposit region. The results show that proper selection of proppant and fracturing fluid can reduce fracture width and increase conductivity. The novel laboratory imaging procedure introduced in the article is a valuable method for assessing the vulnerability of reservoir rocks to embedment.
