Modifying absorption process configurations to improve their performance for Post-Combustion CO2 capture - What have we learned and what is still Missing?

Omar Khalifa et al.

Summary: The mitigation of climate change through reducing anthropogenic CO2 emissions has gained significant traction recently. Improving the conventional PCC process by changing solvents or enhancing process flowsheets is crucial for achieving higher energetic efficiency and lower exergy losses. Standardized frameworks and optimization algorithms are needed for integrated solvent and process synthesis.

Systematic study of the effect of the co-solvent on the performance of amine-based solvents for CO2 capture

Ismail I. I. Alkhatib et al.

Summary: Aqueous amines technology is mature for large-scale CO2 capture, but high energy regeneration remains a drawback. Water-free and water-lean solvents are attractive alternatives to reduce regeneration energy, with ethylene glycol showing promise as a co-solvent for minimizing CO2 solubility reduction and decreasing enthalpy of absorption. Systematic studies on the effect of co-solvent on thermodynamic properties for optimizing the separation process are needed.

Experimental Measurement of Carbon Dioxide Solubility in Aqueous N-Methyldiethanolamine+2-(2-Aminoethylamino) Ethanol plus Sulfolane and Diethanolamine+2-(2-Aminoethylamino) Ethanol plus Sulfolane Hybrid Solvents at Various Temperatures and High Pressure

Ehsan Asadi et al.

Summary: The study showed that by altering the solvent combination and factors such as temperature and pressure, CO2 loading can be increased to enhance its solubility. AEEA demonstrated better performance in CO2 absorption and removal, while DEA showed weaker abilities. The selectivity of alkanolamines towards CO2 was found to be in the order of AEEA > MDEA > DEA.

Packed column modelling and experimental evaluation for CO2 absorption using MDEA solution at high pressure and high CO2 concentrations

Muhammad Zubair Shahid et al.

Summary: The study focused on experimental evaluation and modeling of CO2 absorption using MDEA solvent, demonstrating that CO2 removal efficiency can be enhanced by adjusting amine concentrations, liquid flowrates, and feed CO2 concentrations under high pressure and high CO2 concentration conditions. A rate-based model was developed and successfully validated with experimental data, showing the potential for achieving higher CO2 removal efficiency under extended process conditions.

High-Pressure Vapor-Liquid Equilibrium Measurement of CO2 Solubility into Aqueous Solvents of (Diisopropylamine plus L-Lysine) and (Diisopropylamine plus Piperazine plus L-Lysine) at Different Temperatures and Compositions

Ali Haghtalab et al.

Summary: The study obtained new experimental data on CO2 solubility in various systems, showing that decreasing temperature and increasing pressure lead to higher CO2 loading in organic solvents. Substituting some components can improve CO2 solubility, and PZ is more effective than DIPA in removing CO2. The use of a quadratic equation to correlate CO2 partial pressure and loading, as well as the application of the Clausius-Clapeyron equation to compute enthalpy of absorption, revealed important insights into the systems' behavior.

Sustainability criteria as a game changer in the search for hybrid solvents for CO2 and H2S removal

Ismail I. I. Alkhatib et al.

Summary: A multi-criteria assessment approach, combining sustainability indicators, was developed and applied to examine the performance of hybrid solvents for acid gas removal. The study compared six solvents, including benchmark aqueous MEA, and found that MEA performed the best overall. MEA + NMP hybrid solvent showed potential in terms of reduced absorption capability and energy of regeneration, but failed in sustainability metrics.

Comparison of CO2 absorption performance between methyl-di- ethanolamine and tri-ethanolamine solution systems and its analysis in terms of amine molecules

Sang-Jun Han et al.

Summary: This study analyzes the features of chemical CO2 absorption using tertiary amine solvents by comparing the absorption performance and electrical properties between methyl-di-ethanolamine (MDEA) and tri-ethanolamine (TEA) systems. The results suggest that the different molecular structures of the two amine molecules significantly affect absorption performance and electrical properties. The study also highlights the importance of water concentration in the amine solution and discusses the base-catalyzed nature of the absorption reaction.
