Microwave-assisted catalytic hydrothermal carbonization of Laminaria japonica for hydrochars catalyzed and activated by potassium compounds

Zhuhong Ding et al.

Summary: Limited investigations have been conducted on preparing and applying alga-based hydrochars using microwave-assisted catalytic hydrothermal carbonization (MA-CHTC). The study successfully prepared hydrochars from Laminaria japonica biomass with various catalysts and showed improved Pb(II) adsorption capacities due to the synergetic chemical activation of the spiked catalysts, highlighting the potential for tailored design of engineered hydrochars for specific applications.

Hydrothermal conversion of different lignocellulosic biomass feedstocks-Effect of the process conditions on hydrochar structures

Fatih Gulec et al.

Summary: In this study, hydrothermal processing of five biomass feedstocks under different conditions revealed structural changes in biomass, categorized into three groups based on lignocellulosic composition. The yield of hydrochar was influenced by the initial structure of the biomass, with higher lignin content biomass showing lower transformation and lower hydrochar yield. Additionally, a novel technique called displacement was introduced to quantify the impact of hydrothermal treatment on biomass structure and reactivity.

Thermokinetic study of residual solid digestate from anaerobic digestion

Collins I. Akor et al.

Summary: Anaerobic digestion is an effective waste management method in the agri-food sector, but faces challenges such as handling the by-products like solid digestate (SD). The traditional method of using SD as organic fertilizer on land is becoming less viable as the industry grows. New research suggests the potential of using SD as a biofuel source, with kinetic predictions indicating a temperature above 210 degrees C is needed for decomposition.
