Application of model predictive control to grid flexibility provision by distributed energy resources in residential dwellings under uncertainty

Kento Sasaki et al.

Summary: This study proposed a scheme using time-of-use electricity rates as an incentive to encourage residential prosumers to provide more flexibility by controlling distributed energy resources. Numerical simulations showed that the developed model could integrate prediction errors and provide flexibility to the grid, while also evaluating the economies of the aggregator and prosumers.

Shangshang Wei et al.

Summary: This study introduces a single-layer multi-timescale framework for coordinating operation performance at different timescales, incorporated into an improved SMPC strategy. Results from simulation evaluations demonstrate that the improved strategy achieves the best tradeoff performance in terms of economy, robustness, and computational efficiency.

Integrating supply and demand-side management in renewable-based energy systems

Geremi Gilson Dranka et al.

Summary: The study highlights the high potential of Demand-Response (DR) in power systems planning, which helps delay future investment in power capacity and reduce CO2 emissions. However, the limited potential of DR to integrate additional renewable plants and uncertainties related to future weather conditions need to be emphasized.

Robust optimization of renewable-based multi -energy micro-grid integrated with flexible energy conversion and storage devices

Amir Aris Lekvan et al.

Summary: This paper introduces a new model for optimizing the scheduling of renewable-based multi-energy microgrid systems, incorporating emerging high-efficient technologies to reduce total operational costs. The model allows participation in three energy markets for profit maximization and uses a hybrid robust/stochastic framework to address uncertainties. Simulations show that integrated scheduling of multi-energy microgrids with emerging technologies and V2G capability can reduce total operational costs by 14.2%.

Making the case for time-of-use electric rates to boost the value of battery storage in commercial buildings with grid connected PV systems

Sergio B. Sepulveda-Mora et al.

Summary: Delaying battery replacement has significant economic benefits, as letting the battery degrade to 50% of initial capacity is comparable to a 30% reduction in battery capital cost during the project lifetime. The ability of a building to benefit from solar-plus-storage depends on the degradation limit and tariff structure, but not strongly on load pattern and size. Time-of-use tariffs are expected to promote rapid cost-effective adoption of PV systems with batteries in commercial buildings in the near future.

Buildings-to-distribution-network integration for coordinated voltage regulation and building energy management via distributed resource flexibility

Hannah Fontenot et al.

Summary: This paper introduces a novel framework for Buildings-to-Distribution-Network (B2DN) integration to optimize resources across building and power distribution networks and improve overall system efficiency and reliability. Simulation results demonstrate that the B2DN controller successfully reduces distribution network active power losses and enhances voltage regulation while minimizing building energy costs and maintaining occupant comfort. Additionally, uncertainty analysis shows minimal decrease in the B2DN controller's performance in the presence of randomness in weather variables, building internal heat gains, and distribution network nodal base demands.
