Benchmark study of simulators for thermo-hydraulic modelling of low enthalpy geothermal processes

Julian E. Mindel et al.

Summary: A comparative test suite was created to assess the thermo-hydraulic modelling capabilities of various geothermal simulators, with 10 different simulators being used as benchmarks. Results from the tests compared among participants showed that most simulators were able to perform reliably, but significant relative deviations occurred in cases with strong gradients or due to sub-optimal model setup caused by simulator limitations.

Waste heat recovery in low temperature networks versus domestic heat pumps - A techno-economic and environmental analysis

Monica Arnaudo et al.

Summary: The study proposed waste heat recovery as a promising solution, comparing it to domestic heat pumps through analysis. Experimental results indicate that waste heat recovery can reduce fossil fuel use and show that local grid limitations are a bottleneck for the feasibility of domestic heat pumps.

Minimum transmissivity and optimal well spacing and flow rate for high-temperature aquifer thermal energy storage

Daniel T. Birdsell et al.

Summary: By analyzing the reservoir engineering and economic constraints of HT-ATES systems, this study identified the optimal well spacing and flow rate, as well as the ideal depth for reducing heat cost. The concept of MEVT was introduced to assess the economic viability of HT-ATES, which can assist in estimating the global potential of HT-ATES.

Seasonal thermal energy storage: A techno-economic literature review

Tianrun Yang et al.

Summary: Seasonal thermal energy storage (STES) has the potential to store summer heat for winter use, allowing renewable resources to meet seasonal heat demand without relying on fossil fuels. A review of STES technologies shows that tank and pit thermal energy storage exhibits balanced technical and economic performance. Additionally, borehole and aquifer thermal energy storage perform well economically, while latent and thermochemical heat storage excel technically. Further economic studies and transparency in reporting are needed to strengthen the foundation for policymaking in this area.
