Numerical simulation of gas production from natural gas hydrate deposits with multi-branch wells: Influence of reservoir properties

Panpan Zhang et al.

Summary: Natural gas hydrate is considered a crucial future energy source, but commercial production is challenging for hydrate accumulations without impermeable boundaries. The reservoir properties have an impact on the gas production potential, with high initial hydrate saturation leading to longer production duration but lower production rate. An increase in intrinsic permeability of isotropic reservoirs may shorten production duration but result in a lower gas recovery ratio.

A Critical Review of the Physicochemical Impacts of Water Chemistry on Shale in Hydraulic Fracturing Systems

Hasan Javed Khan et al.

Summary: In hydraulic fracturing of unconventional hydrocarbon resources, the choice of water chemistry, including produced water, has a significant impact on the transport and geochemical properties of shales. The high salinity fluid used can create both benefits and complications in controlling mechanisms such as shale softening, mineral dissolution, mineral precipitation, fines migration, and wettability alteration.

Microstructure and mechanical properties alterations in shale treated via CO2/CO2-water exposure

Junping Zhou et al.

Summary: This study investigates the influence of sub/super-critical CO2-water exposure on the microstructure and mechanical properties of shale. The results show that CO2 exposure leads to a decrease in carbonate and clay content in shale, while altering pore structures and reducing the mechanical properties of the shale. Additionally, the study finds that greater alterations in the pore structure and mechanical properties are induced by supercritical CO2 compared to subcritical CO2, and these alterations are further enhanced by CO2-water exposure.

Combined micro-proppant and supercritical carbon dioxide (SC-CO2) fracturing in shale gas reservoirs: A review

C. P. Zhang et al.

Summary: SC-CO2 fracturing (SCF) has low proppant-carrying capacity compared to traditional water-based fracturing (WBF), impacting its effectiveness in exploiting deep unconventional gas reservoirs. Micro-proppants with higher carrying capacity show potential for improving proppant concentration in SCF-created fractures. The study emphasizes the importance of fracturing fluid viscosity, flow states, and proppant size in enhancing micro-proppant carrying capacity in SCF.

Effect of supercritical CO2 extraction on CO2/CH4 competitive adsorption in Yanchang shale

Chao Qin et al.

Summary: This study found that the adsorption capacity of CO2/CH4 on shale decreases after ScCO2 extraction, but the feasibility of CS-ESGR is not affected. It is recommended to lower the reservoir pressure before injecting CO2 into shale reservoir, and consider the efficiency and engineering cost of CS-ESGR comprehensively.

The influences of super-critical CO2 saturation on tensile characteristics and failure modes of shales

Yiyu Lu et al.

Summary: The study revealed that saturation with Sc-CO2 had a negative impact on the tensile properties of shale, leading to a decrease in Brazilian splitting strength and modulus, as well as a shift in failure mode from single tensile to tensile-shear mixed failure. The weakening of carbonate cementation made bedding planes more prone to damage, and the increase in porosity caused by calcite dissolution and organic matter extraction was identified as the fundamental reason for the deterioration of shale tensile properties.

Effect of sub-/super-critical CO2 and brine exposure on the mechanical and acoustic emission characteristics of shale

Junping Zhou et al.

Summary: The interaction between fluid and shale has a significant impact on the mechanical behavior of the shale, especially in the process of long-term CO2 sequestration. This study found that supercritical CO2 caused more significant mechanical weakening in shale compared to subcritical CO2, with further weakening observed in the presence of both CO2 and brine. The fractal dimensions obtained from acoustic emission signals showed a positive correlation with damage variables, suggesting the potential use of fractal dimensions to describe damage in shale.

The role of supercritical carbon dioxide for recovery of shale gas and sequestration in gas shale reservoirs

Qiao Lyu et al.

Summary: The development of hydraulic fracturing and horizontal drilling techniques has expanded the exploitation of shale gas resources, but potential environmental issues with water usage have prompted research on supercritical carbon dioxide (SC-CO2) as an alternative stimulation fluid. SC-CO2 has shown promise in enhancing shale gas recovery and potentially sequestering CO2 in shale reservoirs, thus reducing carbon emissions. Understanding shale-CO2 interactions and the long-term effects of SC-CO2 injection is crucial for the efficiency and environmental impact of this technology.
