A causal supervisory control strategy for optimal control of a heavy-duty Diesel engine with SCR aftertreatment

Stijn van Dooren et al.

Summary: Diesel engines remain the primary power source in heavy-duty and non-road applications. Optimizing and controlling the engine and its exhaust-gas aftertreatment system for low fuel consumption and low pollutant emissions is a challenging task. This paper develops a supervisory control strategy based on Pontryagin's minimum principle and demonstrates its performance close to the globally optimal solution.

Optimal Integrated Emission Management through Variable Engine Calibration

Johannes Ritzmann et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates the potential for improving the trade-off between fuel consumption and tailpipe NOx emissions through VEC in both conventional vehicles and HEVs. By utilizing preoptimization and dynamic programming, the optimal trade-off points can be efficiently found. VEC significantly reduces fuel consumption and NOx emissions in conventional vehicles, achieving improvements in both areas.
