Applications of Nonlinearity in Passive Vibration Control: A Review

P. S. Balaji et al.

Summary: This review discusses the application of nonlinearity in passive vibration control devices, showing how nonlinearity is applied and beneficial in the systems. Nonlinearity has also been successfully applied in energy harvesting devices, nonlinear energy sinks, and metamaterials for vibration isolation and energy harvesting purposes. The implementation of nonlinearity in engineering systems has shown significant benefits over linear systems.

A semi-active suspension using a magnetorheological damper with nonlinear negative-stiffness component

J. Yang et al.

Summary: Active suspensions have excellent performance in reducing vibrations, but have high power consumption, cost, and potential instability issues. Semi-active suspensions are simple and stable, but do not provide equivalent performance. This new semi-active suspension with negative stiffness component using MR damper provides vibration-reduction performance comparable to active systems, avoiding the disadvantages of active control.

A hybrid skyhook active force control for impact mitigation using magneto-rheological elastomer isolator

Mohd Sabirin Rahmat et al.

Summary: This paper presents the control characteristics of an impact isolator with a magneto-rheological elastomer isolator device (MREID) and proposes a method to control the input current using HySAFC. The study shows that HySAFC can improve the performance of MREID in simulation and experiment, providing fast response when impact occurs.

Active vibration reduction system with mass damper tuned using the sliding mode control algorithm

Jacek Snamina et al.

Summary: This paper evaluates the sliding mode control parameters used to tune a dynamic damper in the vibration reduction system and analyzes the effectiveness of the presented vibration reduction system and the power of the controlled voltage source supplying an electrodynamic linear motor. The classical sliding mode control algorithm is modified based on the analysis of calculation results, and the operation of the modified algorithm is verified during simulation. The proposed vibration reduction system is implemented on a laboratory stand, and measurement results confirm its effectiveness.
