DMSO as an auxiliary solvent in the fabrication of homogeneous chitin-based films obtaining from an ionic liquid process

Dawid Kasprzak et al.

Summary: A novel preparation procedure has been designed for the fabrication of homogeneous chitin films, based on processing biopolymers in ionic liquid-based solvents with the assistance of dimethyl sulfoxide co-solvent. The concept of reduced viscosity allows for easier manufacture of chitin compared to traditional methods, while also reducing the amount of ionic liquid consumed for biopolymer dissolution. Additionally, chitin/cellulose composite films were prepared and characterized, with properties that combine features of pure cellulose and pure chitin films.
