Modifying the maternal microbiota alters the gut-brain metabolome and prevents emotional dysfunction in the adult offspring of obese dams

Daniel E. Radford-Smith et al.

Summary: Maternal obesity has a negative impact on the emotional behavior of offspring. However, perinatal intake of a multispecies probiotic can mitigate this effect. The probiotic treatment improves gut and brain metabolism, increases neuroplasticity, and enhances resilience to emotional dysfunction induced by maternal obesity.

Zinc oxide nanoparticle causes toxicity to the development of mouse oocyte and early embryo

Chunjie Huang et al.

Summary: This study reported the hazardous effects of zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO NP) on the development of mouse oocytes and pre-implantation embryos. ZnO NP compromised the meiosis process, caused cellular stress, activated autophagy and apoptosis, disrupted cytoskeleton architecture, and induced DNA damage, leading to developmental arrest and degeneration of oocytes and early embryos. The study suggests that ZnO NP is toxic to oocytes and embryos in mammals, highlighting the need for careful evaluation of human exposure and its impact on reproductive health.

Gut microbiota changes in preeclampsia, abnormal placental growth and healthy pregnant women

Lihui Huang et al.

Summary: This study compared the gut microbiota of women with PE, abnormal placental growth, and healthy pregnant women, finding significant alterations in the compositions of gut microbiota in PE and APG groups. It suggests that gut microbiota may play a role in the progression of PE.

Ferroptosis: mechanisms, biology and role in disease

Xuejun Jiang et al.

Summary: Ferroptosis, as a form of regulated cell death driven by iron-dependent phospholipid peroxidation, has seen significant growth in research in recent years. Studies have focused on molecular mechanisms, regulation, and functions of ferroptosis, linking this cell death modality to various pathologies and proposing its roles in normal physiology and potential therapeutic targeting.

Bifidobacteria-mediated immune system imprinting early in life

Bethany M. Henrick et al.

Summary: Early immune-microbe interactions play a role in the development of allergies, asthma, and inflammatory diseases. Breastfeeding promotes healthier immune-microbe relationships by providing necessary nutrients to beneficial microbes. The lack of bifidobacteria and genes required for HMO utilization can lead to systemic inflammation and immune dysregulation in early life.

Metformin ameliorates maternal high-fat diet-induced maternal dysbiosis and fetal liver apoptosis

Szu-Wei Huang et al.

Summary: Maternal high-fat diet can lead to weight gain, intrahepatic lipid accumulation, alterations in serum short-chain fatty acid profile, intestinal tight junctions, and dysbiosis. Prenatal metformin alleviates the effects of high-fat diet on maternal rats and reduces inflammation and apoptosis in fetal liver and intestines, indicating potential benefits for pregnant obese women.

The STING1 network regulates autophagy and cell death

Ruoxi Zhang et al.

Summary: STING1 plays a crucial role in infection, inflammation, and immunity by activating transcription factors, as well as regulating autophagy and various cell death modalities. Understanding the signaling pathways of STING1 may provide insights into new therapeutic targets.
