Multitrophic diversity and biotic associations influence subalpine forest ecosystem multifunctionality

Ya-Huang Luo et al.

Summary: Biodiversity and species interactions have significant effects on ecosystem multifunctionality. Elevation and soil pH can modify species composition and richness, and influence multiple ecosystem functions simultaneously. Species richness across multiple trophic groups has stronger effects on multifunctionality than species richness at any single trophic level. Biotic associations are positively associated with multifunctionality. The relative effects of diversity on multifunctionality increase at the scale of the larger community.

Summary: In recent years, studies on ecosystem multifunctionality have increased, but there is still a lack of consistency in determining and measuring appropriate functions. Views on ecosystem functions vary depending on the field of ecology.

Scaling up biodiversity-ecosystem functioning relationships: the role of environmental heterogeneity in space and time

Patrick L. Thompson et al.

Summary: The study used a Lotka-Volterra competition model to simulate the scale dependence of biodiversity and ecosystem functioning, finding that more biodiversity is required to maintain functioning at larger spatial and temporal scales, with the autocorrelation of environmental heterogeneity influencing the rate at which the number of species needed increases.

The function-dominance correlation drives the direction and strength of biodiversity-ecosystem functioning relationships

Michael S. Crawford et al.

Summary: Community composition plays a crucial role in how biodiversity changes affect ecosystem functioning, with the relationship between functional diversity and ecosystem functioning being influenced by the dominance of certain species in the community. Removing seed inflow can strengthen this link but weaken it within certain treatments, indicating that changes in species' identities may have a greater impact on ecosystem functioning than changes in species richness.

We should not necessarily expect positive relationships between biodiversity and ecosystem functioning in observational field data

James G. Hagan et al.

Summary: Studies have found generally positive relationships between biodiversity and ecosystem function in controlled experiments, while observational field data show variable relationships. Biotic interactions filtering species during community assembly may result in high biodiversity effects on functioning even with low observed local diversity.
