Mapping trade-offs among urban fringe land use functions to accurately support spatial planning

Yuefeng Lyu et al.

Summary: This study aims to analyze the spatial distribution and interactions of LUFs in urban fringe areas to identify synergies and trade-offs in urban expansion and environmental planning. By using an improved LUFs classification system and fine scale datasets, nine sub-land use functions in Binzhou city, China were quantified and two spatial planning-zoning schemes were proposed based on land use function and human utilization intensity.

A framework to integrate multifunctionality analyses into green infrastructure planning

Yanan Wang et al.

Summary: This study characterized and mapped the multifunctionality of green infrastructure in the Fengtai District of Beijing, aiming to assess and improve the degree of multifunctionality, identify different types of multifunctionality, and propose adaptive solutions. The results showed that only 5.55% of the study area had high multifunctional degree, and seven types of multifunctionality were identified, each requiring different improvement strategies for planning and design practice. The adaptive model developed offers integrated solutions for preserving, restoring, and embedding levels corresponding to the characterization of GI multifunctional types.

Uncovering the relationships between ecosystem services and social- ecological drivers at different spatial scales in the Beijing-Tianjin- Hebei region

Jiashu Shen et al.

Summary: This study analyzed the spatial patterns and relationships of six ecosystem service supplies in the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region in 2015, revealing differences in spatial pattern robustness across scales, antagonistic relationships between provisioning service and other ecosystem services, and predominantly synergistic relationships between regulating services and cultural service. The impacts of social-ecological drivers varied in direction and magnitude across ecosystem services at different scales, with the normalized difference vegetation index identified as the most influential driver.

Mapping and analysing tradeoffs, synergies and losses among multiple ecosystem services across a transitional area in Beijing, China

Long Chen et al.

Summary: Understanding the complex relationships among ecosystem services is crucial for optimized management, and a proposed assessment framework quantifies and displays intensities of relationships among multiple ecosystem services. Spatial heterogeneity and gradient effects of these relationships were revealed in the Beijing Bay Area, showing significant variations among townships.

A review of studies assessing ecosystem services provided by urban green and blue infrastructure

Clara J. Veerkamp et al.

Summary: This review analyzed 850 peer-reviewed publications to characterize urban ES assessment in terms of geographical location, urban GBI type and methodological aspects. It found that local temperature regulation and recreation and aesthetic appreciation are the main focus of urban ES studies. GBIs were often assessed in unspecified green space and parks, with a common method being comparison of ES delivery along a gradient of vegetation cover. Different ES indicators were used, with a majority quantifying ecosystem properties.

Mapping the spatiotemporal heterogeneity of ecosystem service relationships and bundles in Ningxia, China

Jie Xu et al.

Summary: This study selected and assessed 8 representative ES types in Ningxia, revealing the tradeoff or synergistic relationships between paired ESs and their linkages with socioecological driving factors. Spatiotemporal dynamic changes in ESBs were mapped in Ningxia from 2000 to 2015, showing significant differences in natural and socioeconomic conditions from south to north in the region. The results highlighted the coupled relationships among these ESs and certain achievements in ecological construction in Ningxia, with most ES pairs mainly positively correlated at all scales.

Scale effect and spatially explicit drivers of interactions between ecosystem services-A case study from the Loess Plateau

Menghao Yang et al.

Summary: This study compared and analyzed the trade-offs and synergies between four ecosystem services at different scales on the Loess Plateau. It found that most relationships between ecosystem services were synergistic and enhanced as the scale increased. Additionally, the strongest synergies or weakest trade-offs between ecosystem services were observed at the municipality administrative scale, with correlations varying spatially based on factors such as vegetation cover, annual average temperature, and construction land percentage.

Exploring Spatial Distribution of Urban Park Service Areas in Shanghai Based on Travel Time Estimation: A Method Combining Multi-Source Data

Zihao Li et al.

Summary: This study proposes a new approach to estimate the travel times of park visitors and analyze the characteristics of park service areas using empirical methods, with Shanghai as a case study. The research explores the actual characteristics of urban parks, the time sensitivity of citizens visiting parks, and the spatial relationship between park service areas and accessibility defined by time consumption.
