Yan Chen et al.

Summary: This study investigated the occurrence and temporal variations in the fluxes and compositions of n-alkanes and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAHs) in sediment cores from a small catchment in western Dianchi lake, China. The results showed the ongoing organic contamination from inputs to outputs, highlighting the influence of agricultural and industrial economy on the catchment outlets.

Eco-hydrologic stability zonation of dams and power plants using the combined models of SMCE and CEQUALW2

Rouhallah Fatahi Nafchi et al.

Summary: This study focused on determining stable and instable eco-hydrologic regions in the study area by selecting factors affecting eco-hydrologic stability, preparing layers in GIS, weighting factors using analytic hierarchy process and pairwise comparisons, and integrating homogenous units to create a final map. The CEQUALW2 software was used to confirm data accuracy and perform water quality simulation in the studied dam, with pollutant source and water quality identified as the most important factors. The final map indicated unsuitable stability conditions in most areas at downstream reaches.

Rapid monitoring of heavy metal pollution in lake water using nitrogen and phosphorus nutrients and physicochemical indicators by support vector machine

Xiaolong Li et al.

Summary: A novel method using support vector machine (SVM) model was developed to predict heavy metal concentration in lake water, incorporating low-cost nutrients and physicochemical indicators as input variables. The study found that heavy metal concentrations in the lake water varied spatially and seasonally, with the highest levels during the medium-water period and the lowest during the dry season.

A sediment record of terrestrial organic matter inputs to Dongting Lake and its environmental significance from 1855 to 2019

Yanhua Wang et al.

Summary: This study investigated the historical trend of anthropogenic inputs in West Dongting Lake through the analysis of biomarkers, total organic carbon, and particle size in sediment cores. The sedimentary biomarkers showed significant temporal heterogeneity, controlled by different factors and sedimentary processes. The dominance shift from terrestrial C3 plants to algae in the lake water was attributed to hot and drought climate conditions and enhanced agricultural inputs from 1855 to 2019 in the watershed.

Laboratory investigation on erosion threshold shear stress of cohesive sediment in Karkheh Dam

Rouhallah Fatahi Nafchi et al.

Summary: This research focuses on understanding the dynamic behavior of fine-sticky sediments in the development and maintenance of reservoirs and water transfer networks for the Karkheh dam reservoir management. The results show that the concentration of eroded sediments is a function of time for the consolidation of reservoir sediment, and the duration of consolidation time is an effective factor on critical erosion shear stress. Erosion rate suggests an inverse relationship with the life of the settled sediments, indicating that the best flow shear stress for sediment removal from the Karkheh dam reservoir should be greater than 0.31 N/m(2).

Effects of Sediment Dredging on Nutrient Release and Eutrophication in the Gate-Controlled Estuary of Northern Taihu Lake

Xi Chen et al.

Summary: Through laboratory experiments, it was found that dredging can improve long-term water quality under stable hydrodynamic conditions. Dynamic release of nutrients from dredged sediments was significantly higher than static release, emphasizing the importance of combining dredging with specific ecological and engineering measures to minimize internal pollutant release.

Human impact on C/N/P accumulation in lake sediments from northeast China during the last 150 years

Kunshan Bao et al.

Summary: By analyzing sediment cores from 11 shallow lakes in the Songnen Plain, northeast China, this study investigated the accumulation rates of organic carbon, total nitrogen, and total phosphorous over the past 150 years. The research found that nutrient accumulation rates in the lakes increased by approximately 2 times from the mid-19th century to the 1950s, and by approximately 5 times after the 1950s, due to increased anthropogenic impacts in northeast China.

The content, composition, and influencing factors of organic carbon in the sediments of two types of constructed wetlands

Ruirui Yang et al.

Summary: The study found that the content and storage of soil organic carbon (SOC) in subsurface flow constructed wetlands were significantly higher than those in surface flow constructed wetlands, but the organic carbon storage in subsurface flow constructed wetlands was less stable. The composition of SOC in both wetlands was mainly influenced by total nitrogen, and the abundance of microbial species in subsurface flow constructed wetlands was positively correlated with SOC.

Nathan D. McTigue et al.

Summary: Coastal wetlands have sediments containing organic matter preserved for millennia, acting as a sink for atmospheric carbon dioxide and potential source of greenhouse gases. By measuring the decomposition rates of carbon in wetland sediments under oxygenated conditions, it is estimated that eroded salt marsh sediment in the United States releases 62.90 +/- 2.81 Gg C . yr(-1) annually.

Different storm responses of organic carbon transported to Lake Taihu by the eutrophic Tiaoxi River, China

Dong Liu et al.

Summary: Low-frequency high-magnitude storms can transport disproportionate amounts of terrigenous organic carbon into lakes, impacting the lake carbon budget and water environment. By studying the storm-induced organic carbon transport in a eutrophic river entering Lake Taihu, it was found that the input of riverine organic carbon during storms influenced the lake water environment across a large region for more than 10 days.
