Fish isotopic niches associated with environmental indicators and human disturbance along a disturbed large subtropical river in China

Sai Wang et al.

Summary: Stable isotopes are increasingly used to understand the impacts of environmental changes on riverine ecological properties. The study found that the isotopic niches of fish in rivers are influenced by environmental gradients and human disturbance, with the spatial variation determined by external factors like epilithic periphyton and suspended particulate organic matter.

Regional ecological efficiency and future sustainable development of marine ranch in China: An empirical research using DEA and system dynamics

Xixi Zhang et al.

Summary: This study explores the regional differences in ecological efficiency (EF) of marine ranches and proposes sustainable development countermeasures through scenario simulations. Using the Malmquist-DEA index and system dynamics (SD) model, the study evaluates EF discrepancies in different marine ranch zones in China and simulates EF evolution trends under different policy scenarios. The results show unbalanced EF levels at sea and provincial levels, with positive impacts of sufficient capital investment, technological innovation, and technological experience accumulation on EF. Suggested improvements include capital input, local conditions, and scientific research resources to provide a scientific basis for policymakers to enhance marine ranch EF.

Stable isotope signatures reveal the significant contributions of microphytobenthos and saltmarsh-driven nutrition in the intertidal benthic food webs

In Ok Lee et al.

Summary: The study in a representative tidal saltmarsh in South Korea shows that the trophic structure is primarily influenced by sediment mud content and/or dominant vegetation. The benthic food-web structure and functioning are also influenced by seasonal variations.

Food web structure in relation to environmental drivers across a continental shelf ecosystem

Andrea Walters et al.

Summary: The study used stable isotope ratios to investigate the food web structure on the Celtic Sea Shelf, finding complexity and high trophic redundancy in intermediate trophic levels, indicating resilience to disturbances. This suggests that depth and intensity of pelagic production are major drivers of trophic structure and functioning of Celtic Sea communities.

Trophic structures of artificial reef communities off the southern coast of the Korean peninsula as determined using stable isotope analyses

Hee Yoon Kang et al.

Summary: The deployment of artificial reefs has become a popular method for enhancing biodiversity and resource abundance for fisheries. A study comparing colonizing faunal assemblages and reef-associated food-web structures between artificial reefs and natural reefs showed differences in composition but equivalency in isotopic functional indices, highlighting a convergence in trophic structure between the two reef types.
