Restoration and fuel hazard reduction result in equivalent reductions in crown fire behavior in dry conifer forests

Scott M. Ritter et al.

Summary: The management of historically frequent-fire forests in the western United States has attracted attention due to the increased occurrence of high-severity fire. Efforts are being made to reduce fire hazards and restore historical forest structures. This study evaluated thinning treatments in the Black Hills National Forest and found that restoration treatments created higher vertical and horizontal complexity compared to fuel hazard reduction treatments.

Mid-Scale Drivers of Variability in Dry Mixed-Conifer Forests of the Mogollon Rim, Arizona

Matthew Jaquette et al.

Summary: The structure and composition of southwestern dry mixed-conifer forests have changed significantly, leading to decreased forest resiliency and threatening ecosystem services. Historical forests differ from contemporary forests, with environmental factors playing a key role in contemporary forest conditions. Managers can use this understanding to tailor silvicultural prescriptions to environmental templates.

Evidence for widespread changes in the structure, composition, and fire regimes of western North American forests

R. K. Hagmann et al.

Summary: Implementation of wildfire- and climate-adaptation strategies in seasonally dry forests of western North America faces constraints and uncertainties due to historic resource and land use changes. Research shows persistent fire deficits, widespread alterations to ecological structures, and increased vulnerability to drought and fire in contemporary conditions. Objectively evaluating ongoing research and monitoring will help differentiate necessary uncertainties for effective adaptation strategies.

Pyrosilviculture Needed for Landscape Resilience of Dry Western United States Forests

M. P. North et al.

Summary: To restore resilience in dry western US forests, a paradigm shift in fire management is necessary. The pyrosilviculture approach aims to increase prescribed and managed fire while modifying thinning treatments to optimize more managed fire operations.

Effects of fuel spatial distribution on wildland fire behaviour

Adam L. Atchley et al.

Summary: Fuel density heterogeneity has a significant impact on fire behavior, with increased density and heterogeneity leading to decreased fire spread and burned area, while large characteristic length scales of spatial fuel density result in increased fire spread and area burned.
