Evidence for distinct isotopic compositions of sap and tissue water in tree stems: consequences for plant water source identification

Adria Barbeta et al.

Summary: Recent studies challenge the hypothesis that the isotopic composition of plant stem water reflects that of source water, with findings of isotopic offsets in woody stems. This study demonstrates that sap water in plant stems mirrors the composition of irrigation water, with no isotopic fractionation during root water uptake, but water in nonconductive xylem tissues is consistently depleted in deuterium. Micrometre-scale heterogeneity in water isotopes within woody stems and soil micro-pores explains source-stem isotopic offsets.

Influence of equilibration time, soil texture, and saturation on the accuracy of porewater water isotope assays using the direct H2O(liquid)-H2O(vapor) equilibration method

Devakunjari Vadibeler et al.

Summary: The experiments showed that the equilibration time for isotopic analysis of water in different textured soils and porewater saturation levels varies, with different optimal times for different soil types and saturation levels. The presence of organic carbon in soil also impacts the equilibration time needed for isotopic equilibrium to be reached, requiring longer times for soils with higher organic carbon content.

Summary: The DVE-LS method is used for obtaining stable isotope data in soils and bedrock, but there are contradictory suggestions regarding protocol details. This limits data comparability and quality, with specific sample container material and equilibration times significantly influencing the results.
