Swallowing Safety and Efficiency Impairment Profiles in Individuals with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis

Raele Robison et al.

Summary: Dysphagia is common in individuals with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), impacting their quality of life and health outcomes. This study aimed to determine the prevalence of unsafe and inefficient swallowing in a large cohort of ALS patients, finding that approximately half had safety impairments and two-thirds had swallowing efficiency impairments. Disease onset type had an impact on swallowing profiles, with spinal onset patients showing more safe swallowers and both spinal and bulbar onset patients demonstrating a higher prevalence of inefficient swallowers.

How do people with Motor Neurone Disease experience dysphagia? A qualitative investigation of personal experiences

Dominika Lisiecka et al.

Summary: The study found that the experiences of dysphagia were closely intertwined with the overall disease experience of Motor Neurone Disease patients, who often had a changed perception of food and fear of choking. While they typically managed dysphagia independently, they also employed strategies such as choosing easy to swallow foods and limiting mealtime distractions.

Swallowing Pressure Variability as a Function of Pharyngeal Region, Bolus Volume, Age, and Sex

Corinne A. Jones et al.

Summary: This study measured swallowing pressure variability in healthy adults and found that it differed by pharyngeal region, bolus volume, and age, but not by sex. Abnormal swallowing pressure variability may indicate motor control deviations in individuals with swallowing impairment.

Evaluation of Dysphagia in Motor Neuron Disease. Review of Available Diagnostic Tools and New Perspectives

Elisabet Romero-Gangonells et al.

Summary: Research tested different questionnaires and scales for evaluating dysphagia in MND patients, finding that SwaIQoL revised FS showed high specificity and ALS-SS was the most valid severity scale in the sample studied. A specific questionnaire for screening dysphagia in MND is needed.
