Dihydroquinolylazotetrazole dyes: Effect of a substituent at the tetrazole fragment on spectral properties and thermal Z-E isomerization in organic solvents

Tatiana D. Nekipelova et al.

Summary: New hetarylazo dyes with dihydroquinoline and tetrazole moieties, featuring different substituents at the tetrazole cycle, were synthesized and their spectral properties and thermal Z-E isomerization were studied in various solvents. Substitution of H with a CH3 group at the tetrazole fragment eliminated concentration dependence of absorption spectra and greatly influenced the lifetime of Z-isomers, ranging from milliseconds to seconds and minutes. The position of the CH3 group at the tetrazole fragment was found to be crucial in determining the lifetime of Z-isomers.

Structural Aspects of Photopharmacology: Insight into the Binding of Photoswitchable and Photocaged Inhibitors to the Glutamate Transporter Homologue

Valentina Arkhipova et al.

Summary: Photopharmacology addresses drug selectivity and side effects through the creation of light-activated photoresponsive molecules. However, the structural basis for light-induced modulation of inhibitory potency is still unclear, posing a major design challenge for this emerging field. Crystal structures of glutamate transporter homologue Glt(Tk) with photoresponsive inhibitors provide insight into the origins of photocontrol and lay the foundation for using photocontrolled ligands to study transporter dynamics.

An azo dye for photodynamic therapy that is activated selectively by two-photon excitation

Vinayak Juvekar et al.

Summary: Two-photon photodynamic therapy (TP-PDT) is a promising approach for cancer treatment due to its better penetration depth and spatial selectivity. A new type of photosensitizer with improved ROS generation and higher two-photon excitation capability was discovered in the study. The photosensitizer showed superior PDT properties in mimic tumor spheroids, suggesting its potential in efficient PDT applications and design.
