Two isomeric Cd-viologen coordination polymers with photochromic and photoluminescence properties

Xiao-Nan Li et al.

Summary: Two novel isomeric Cd-viologen coordination polymers with the same empirical formula but different structures have been successfully assembled and characterized. One exhibits a 3D structure, while the other exhibits a 1D channel structure. The photochromic behaviors of the two compounds are different due to different electron transfer pathways.

Viologen-based photochromic coordination compounds for inkless and erasable prints

Peng-Hao Wang et al.

Summary: Both compounds synthesized from the 1,4-benzenedicarboxylate (BDC2-) ligand and the viologen analog 1-(4-carboxyphenyl)-4,4'-bipyridinium (PCV). PCV ligands coordinate with metal atoms to form 1D zigzag chains, further bridged by BDC2- ligands to yield a wave-like layer with a (4, 4) net topology. Compound 1 has a triple-layer structure stacked through van der Waals's force along the b direction, while compound 2 has a double-layer structure further interpenetrating into a 3D structure with lattice water molecules in channels along the a direction. Both compounds exhibit photochromism and decreased photoluminescence upon irradiation, with potential application as an inkless and erasable print medium for compound 1.

Viologen-derived material showing photochromic, visually oxygen responsive, and photomodulated luminescence behaviors

Zhao-Hao Li et al.

Summary: A new viologen-derived Zn(ii) material with a two-dimensional layered structure was synthesized in this study, exhibiting photochromic behavior and serving as a potential O-2 sensitive material in its dehydrated form. Further investigations revealed significantly different photomodulated luminescence behaviors between the original material and its dehydrated product 1a. This study expands the application of viologen derivatives in constructing new photochromic materials with rapid photochromic response.
