Feasibility analysis of wind and solar powered desalination plants: An application to islands

David Borge-Diez et al.

Summary: The challenge of economic surveillance for water projects driven by non-conventional energy sources lies in balancing the need for guaranteed profits in liberalized markets. Combining renewable energy systems with desalination plants is a common solution to the global water scarcity issue. Grants, investment rates, and energy and water sales play key roles in the commercialization of desalination technologies, with factors such as concessional grants, investor expectations, and water-energy sales influencing the economic viability of such projects.

A nature-inspired suspended solar evaporator for water desalination of high-salinity brines

Yu-Qiong Luo et al.

Summary: Inspired by water strider, researchers have demonstrated a new type of solar evaporator with a hydrophobic frame, a hydrophilic solar absorber, and a heat-insulation layer, enabling stable suspension just underneath water surface and achieving salt-resistance and efficient energy utilization. High evaporation rates are achieved in highly concentrated salt solutions without salt accumulation, providing great opportunities in solar-based water desalination and treatment.

Techno-economic review of solar distillation systems: A closer look at the recent developments for commercialisation

Vikrant P. Katekar et al.

Summary: The study finds that solar stills with trays and internal mirrors are the most economical design for passive solar stills, and solar stills with Fresnel lens are the most productive. In terms of active solar stills, double-slope, single-basin still with flat plate collector is the most economical design, while single-slope, single-basin still connected with two solar-dishes is the most productive design. Low concentrating photovoltaic-thermal solar still is identified as the most economical design for hybrid and miscellaneous solar stills, while spherical solar still with parabolic reflector is the most productive design. These identified designs can further be investigated for their commercialization to achieve faster penetration of solar still technology in society.
