Enhanced uranium removal from acidic wastewater by phosphonate-functionalized ordered mesoporous silica: Surface chemistry matters the most

Dimitrios A. Giannakoudakis et al.

Summary: The study presents a phosphonate functionalized ordered mesoporous silica as an efficient adsorbent for uranium removal in acidic conditions, achieving a high up-to-date capacity of 345 mg/g at pH = 4. The presence of other polyvalent cation does not affect the efficiency of adsorption, suggesting inner-sphere complex formation as the mechanism. The surface chemistry was found to be the key feature for the selective and stable removal of U(VI) species, based on spectroscopic validations of surface adsorbed U(VI).

Bayberry tannin directed assembly of a bifunctional graphene aerogel for simultaneous solar steam generation and marine uranium extraction

Fangwu Wu et al.

Summary: Solar steam generation and marine uranium extraction are promising methods for obtaining fresh water and nuclear fuel, and a bifunctional graphene aerogel designed with bayberry tannin has been shown to be effective in achieving both processes simultaneously. The hydrophilic nature of the bayberry tannin helps improve fluid infiltration in the graphene aerogel matrix, enhancing the adsorption of uranium ions.
