What are the Surgical Movements in Orthognathic Surgery That Most Affect the Upper Airways? A Three-Dimensional Analysis

Maria Giralt-Hernando et al.

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate the effects of maxillary and/or mandibular movements on pharyngeal airway volume and minimum cross-sectional area, finding that all surgical treatments resulted in an immediate increase in airway volume and minimum cross-sectional area, followed by a slight decrease (stabilization) at follow-up. Mandibular advancement and mandibular occlusal plane changes by counterclockwise rotation were identified as factors favoring airway increase.

A comparison of voxel- and surface-based cone-beam computed tomography mandibular superimposition in adult orthodontic patients

Gaofeng Han et al.

Summary: The study evaluated the accuracy, reliability, and efficiency of voxel- and surface-based registrations for CBCT mandibular superimposition in adult orthodontic patients. Results showed both methods to be accurate and reliable, with voxel-based registration being more efficient than surface-based registration.

Validation of the OrthoGnathicAnalyser 2.0-3D accuracy assessment tool for bimaxillary surgery and genioplasty

Frank Baan et al.

Summary: Orthognathic surgery is commonly performed to correct dentofacial deformities, and virtual treatment planning is essential in preparation. The OrthoGnathicAnalyser 2.0 tool allows for quantifying the accuracy of orthognathic surgery, specifically assessing osseous chin accuracy. The study confirms the high reproducibility of OrthoGnathicAnalyser 2.0 in quantifying skeletal movements between two (CB)CT scans.

Automatic segmentation of the pharyngeal airway space with convolutional neural network

Sohaib Shujaat et al.

Summary: The study proposed and investigated a 3D convolutional neural network model for automatic segmentation of the pharyngeal airway space. The CNN model showed high precision and recall in identifying the segmented region, with Newtom VGi evo CBCT device outperforming others. This method provides an accurate and time-efficient way to diagnose and treat upper airway problems.

The relationship between bimaxillary orthognathic surgery and the extent of posterior airway space in class II and III patients - A retrospective three-dimensional cohort analysis

Thomas Ruckschloss et al.

Summary: The study aimed to evaluate the impact of bimaxillary orthognathic surgery on the posterior airway space (PAS) in Class II and III patients using cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT). Significant volumetric increases in PAS were observed in Class II patients postoperatively, while Class III patients showed increases primarily in the upper PAS segment. Forward displacement of the maxilla and mandible correlated with changes in some airway parameters.
