Deciphering reticulate evolution of the largest group of polyploid vertebrates, the subfamily cyprininae (Teleostei: Cypriniformes)

Summary: Despite the rarity of polyploidy in animals, the subfamily Cyprininae fishes present a complex and interesting pattern of reticulate evolution. Thirteen independent polyploidization events are hypothesized to have occurred during the evolution of Cyprininae, leading to a complicated post-polyploidization dynamics. The evolutionary history of Cyprinine can be divided into three stages, with the second stage witnessing all tetraploidization events and the last stage hosting hexaploidization events as well as species-specific polyploidization events.

The study also revealed chromosome fusion occurred between two chromosomes inherited from the maternal species, providing insight into the mechanisms of meiotic recombination between homeologous chromosomes.

A New Diploid Parthenogenetic Whiptail Lizard from Sonora, Mexico, Is the Missing Link in the Evolutionary Transition to Polyploidy

Summary: Transitions between sexual and unisexual reproductive modes have significant consequences for the evolutionary trajectories of species. North American whiptail lizards are known to have numerous triploid lineages with no known diploid unisexual ancestors, suggesting alternative mechanisms of triploid formation may be at play. By leveraging genomic, morphological, and karyotypic data, researchers described a new diploid unisexual whiptail and identified it as the likely unisexual progenitor of an extant triploid lineage. The study also resolved patterns of polyploidization within the A. sexlineatus species group and tested predictions about the phenotypic outcomes of hybridization.

The range of this species is extensive, covering Palau, the Caroline Islands, the Kei Islands, Wagabu, and potentially other small islands near New Guinea.
