Ultrasound of the Lateral Femoral Cutaneous Nerve A Review of the Literature and Pictorial Essay

Marco Becciolini et al.

Summary: This article reviews the ultrasound findings in patients with meralgia paresthetica, discussing the anatomy of the lateral femoral cutaneous nerve and potential entrapment sites. Various pathological cases are presented to aid in recognizing ultrasound patterns of meralgia paresthetica, and the experience with ultrasound-guided treatment is also discussed.

Direct Peripheral Nerve Stimulation for the Treatment of Complex Regional Pain Syndrome: A 30-Year Review

Mark A. Chmiela et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates that implantable PNS systems are effective in treating CRPS patients, improving function and reducing long-term pain. While a portion of patients require surgical revisions or implantation of a second PNS system, the majority are able to continue using the PNS system within the institution.

Preoperative Ultrasound in Patients with Meralgia Paresthetica to Detect Anatomical Variations in the Course of the Lateral Femoral Cutaneous Nerve

Godard C. W. de Ruiter et al.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the prevalence of anatomical variations in patients undergoing surgery for meralgia paresthetica, compare preoperative ultrasound data with intraoperative findings, and assess the impact of anatomical variations on surgery duration and success rate of localizing the LFCN. Results showed that preoperative ultrasound is reliable in detecting anatomical variations of LFCN, which can be helpful in identifying the nerve more easily during surgery.

A cook with 'burning in the thigh' and a 'hotspot' in the groin!

Wai Lun Moy

Summary: Meralgia paresthetica is a condition characterized by abnormal sensations on the thigh due to dysfunction of the lateral femoral cutaneous nerve. Good history taking and physical examination are essential for diagnosis, with advanced imaging and neurodiagnostic testing typically unnecessary.

Risk factors of meralgia paresthetica after prone position surgery: Possible influence of operating position, laminectomy level, and preoperative thoracic kyphosis

Shinsuke Yoshida et al.

Summary: This study examined the incidence of MP after prone position surgeries and found a higher rate after spinal surgeries compared to craniotomies. In addition to known risk factors, patients with a greater preoperative thoracic kyphosis angle were also at increased risk of developing MP following thoracolumbar-sacral laminectomies.
