Molecular mechanisms of plant adaptive responses to heavy metals stress

Iryna V. Kosakivska et al.

Summary: This review focuses on the molecular mechanisms of plant adaptive and defense responses during metal stress, including entry, transport and accumulation of heavy metals, effects on physiological processes, gene expressions, and ion sequestration. The most important mechanism of heavy metal tolerance was found to be extracellular and intracellular sequestration, with an emphasis on the role of organic anions and cellular receptors. The functioning of chloroplasts, mitochondria, and the Golgi complex under heavy metal stress were also analyzed.

Are Endophytic Bacteria an Option for Increasing Heavy Metal Tolerance of Plants? A Meta-Analysis of the Effect Size

Valeria Franco-Franklin et al.

Summary: Plant endophytic bacteria have been shown to enhance plant tolerance to heavy metal stress by modulating plant responses to heavy metals, particularly benefiting non-accumulating plants. The effectiveness of the bacteria is influenced by host identity and heavy metal concentration, with bacterial consortia providing the greatest benefit. This study supports the value of endophytic bacteria as a biotechnological tool to mitigate heavy metal stress in a wide range of plant hosts.

Enhancing phytoremediation of hazardous metal(loid)s using genome engineering CRISPR-Cas9 technology

Hemen Sarma et al.

Summary: Rapid and drastic changes in global climate have led to the development of climate-resilient phytoremediation methods, with adverse effects on plant growth due to climate change. Soil contamination with metal(loid)s is a worldwide problem, and adaptation of plants to changing environments is crucial. Creating climate-resistant plants through molecular techniques could provide new opportunities in phytoremediation practices to address the challenges of global warming.

Root and Shoot Response to Nickel in Hyperaccumulator and Non-Hyperaccumulator Species

Stefano Rosatto et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the root and shoot response to nickel in hyperaccumulator and non-hyperaccumulator species. Hyperaccumulators did not show a decrease in root surfaces and biomass due to nickel exposure, while non-hyperaccumulators suffered from metal stress. The analysis of the root system helps clarify the plant response to nickel stress for bioremediation purposes.
