Role of the arterial baroreflex in the sympathetic response to hyperinsulinemia in adult humans

Neil J. McMillan et al.

Summary: This study examines whether peripheral vasodilation induced by insulin contributes to increased muscle sympathetic nerve activity (MSNA) via arterial baroreflex-mediated mechanisms. The results show that insulin-induced peripheral vasodilation plays a role in the increase of MSNA during hyperinsulinemia.

Sympathetic transduction in humans: recent advances and methodological considerations

Benjamin E. Young et al.

Summary: Microneurographic recordings have significantly advanced our understanding of central sympathetic outflow in human health and disease, highlighting the importance of studying vascular and/or blood pressure responses for sympathetic transduction. Different paradigms, such as stress-induced and resting sympathetic transduction, have been used to study sympathetic transduction, emphasizing the need to interpret findings from investigations using different techniques as distinct processes.

Hyperinsulinemia blunts sympathetic vasoconstriction: a possible role of β-adrenergic activation

Jacqueline K. Limberg et al.

Summary: The study shows that hyperinsulinemia induces time-dependent decreases in total peripheral resistance and alters blood pressure maintenance in healthy young men and women. Despite concurrent activation of the sympathetic nervous system, insulin has profound vasodilatory effects in the lower limb. It is suggested that insulin may attenuate sympathetic vasoconstriction by potentiating beta-adrenergic vasodilation and neutralizing alpha-adrenergic vasoconstriction in the leg vasculature.
