Sensitivity of additively manufactured AA7075 to variation in feedstock composition and print parameters

Kasra Momeni

Summary: The study developed a model for the LPBF process of AA7075 alloy considering feedstock composition and print parameters. Results showed that deviation in feedstock composition raises maximum temperature and melt pool size. Excess Cu content led to the largest melt pool dimensions. Increasing scan power resulted in higher peak temperature and larger melt pool. Lowering scan speed increased temperature rise time.

VHCF properties and assessment of specimens and thin-walled component-like structures made of high-strength steel X5CrNiCuNb16-4

Florian Himmelbauer et al.

Summary: In this study, extensive HCF and VHCF tests were conducted on specimens and thin-walled component-like structures made of X5CrNiCuNb16-4. The local assessment concept of a design code proved to be applicable, despite the complex geometry and high-strength material. The transferability of VHCF properties between specimens and structures was confirmed. The large scatter in lifetime was mainly attributed to inclusions, but considering the stress intensity factor significantly reduced the scatter and enabled a more reliable assessment. Furthermore, the root area parameter model provided a conservative fatigue strength for 10(7) cycles.

Role of melt flow dynamics on track surface morphology in the L -PBF additive manufacturing process

Arvind Chouhan et al.

Summary: Laser powder bed fusion (L-PBF) is an additive manufacturing process used to create intricate metal parts, but poor surface roughness of the fabricated parts limits its application. This study investigates the impact of melt flow dynamics on track surface morphology in L-PBF. Experimental and numerical data show good agreement, and optimization of scanning speed and laser spot radius can minimize track surface roughness.

The Effect of PostProcessing on the Ductility and Strength of Ti-6Al-4V Lattice Materials

X. Z. Zhang et al.

Summary: The study found that beta-annealing significantly increased the ductility and strength of Ti-6Al-4V lattices, while chemical etching worsened their mechanical properties. It was also noted that stress fluctuation was common in stress-strain curves for untreated and chemically processed lattices, but absent in beta-annealed lattices.

Visualisation and numerical analysis of laser powder bed fusion under cross-flow

I Bitharas et al.

Summary: In this study, interactions between cross-flow, laser plume, and powder particles during additive manufacturing were visualized and quantified through high-magnification schlieren imaging and 3D multiphysics simulations. The extraction of by-products by the cross-flow, influenced by its velocity, was found to be crucial for build quality in metallic parts production. Refractive index gradients in the atmosphere above the processing area were caused by metal concentration rather than gas temperature.

Summary: The study investigates the use of low power, highly scalable fiber-coupled diode laser sources and the influence of shorter laser wavelengths on material absorption and processing efficiency. Results show that when processing Ti6Al4V, absorption is higher using 450-nm lasers compared to other wavelengths. The research suggests that the low power, low cost, highly compact short wavelength diode laser could be a viable energy source for future powder bed fusion additive manufacturing systems, with potential for productivity scale-up using a DAM methodology.

Fatigue Failure from Inner Surfaces of Additive Manufactured Ti-6Al-4V Components

Joel de Jesus et al.

Summary: Selective laser melting (SLM) is an additive manufacturing process used for producing metallic components with complex geometries, but the poor surface finish and geometry effects can lead to surface stress concentration and reduced fatigue strength. This study found that specimens with internal channels had lower fatigue performance compared to solid samples, with crack initiation mainly from the internal surface, while the application of the Smith-Watson-Topper energy-based parameter was effective in predicting fatigue life.

Summary: Ti6Al4V alloy is widely used in aerospace, medical, and chemical industries due to its excellent corrosion resistance, fracture toughness, and high specific strength. However, parts manufactured using electron beam melting (EBM) may have poor fatigue performance due to rough surfaces and internal porosity. Fatigue strength of the parts is affected by surface defects, with external defects identified as critical crack initiation sites.
