Impact of sodium silicate on lead release and colloid size distributions in drinking water

Bofu Li et al.

Summary: Sodium silicate has been used as a corrosion control treatment for lead in drinking water, but it is found to be inferior to orthophosphate in circumneutral pH water with low alkalinity. Excess silicate can also be highly detrimental to controlling lead release.

Lead Phosphate Particles in Tap Water: Challenges for Point-of-Use Filters

Weiyi Pan et al.

Summary: The study found that under certain conditions, Pb phosphate particles can penetrate point-of-use filters. Increasing ionic strength and adding calcium can help reduce the proportion of Pb penetrating the filters, while adsorption of Ca can enhance filter performance.

Summary: Sodium silicate is believed to reduce lead release through pH increase and silica film formation, showing certain effectiveness in the experiment. However, increasing silica dose in sodium silicate experiment may lead to increased lead release and impact on the pipe.

Relative importance of organic- and iron-based colloids in six Nova Scotian lakes

Lindsay E. Anderson et al.

Summary: Brownification process in lakes is accompanied by increasing concentrations of iron and aluminum, leading to the formation of iron-rich (oxyhydr)oxides in the 1000 kDa fraction. The associations between DOM and primarily inorganic colloids, such as iron and aluminum, pose significant challenges for drinking water treatment systems in the region.

The impact of sampling approach and daily water usage on lead levels measured at the tap

Darren A. Lytle et al.

Summary: This study compared various sampling methods for lead levels in water and found that the levels of lead in water vary with daily water usage, with manual composite and random daytime sampling methods being more sensitive to changes. In addition, the lead concentration in directly collected LSL samples was higher than that in sequential sampling methods.

Effectiveness of point-of-use and pitcher filters at removing lead phosphate nanoparticles from drinking water

Evelyne Dore et al.

Summary: The addition of orthophosphate (PO4) is a common corrosion control treatment to reduce lead (Pb) concentrations in consumer taps. A study testing six certified commercially available faucet-mounted POU and pitcher filters with Pb-PO4 nanoparticles found varying effectiveness in removing these nanoparticles. The findings suggest a need to re-evaluate the test waters used in certification challenge tests.

Impact of sodium silicate on lead release from lead(ii) carbonate

Bofu Li et al.

Summary: Silicates have minimal impact on lead release, while orthophosphate serves as a more effective inhibitor to reduce lead release. Polyphosphate increases lead release likely due to aqueous complexation and possibly colloidal dispersion.
