Influence of the nitrogen content on the structure and properties of MoNbTaVW high entropy alloy thin films

Ao Xia et al.

Summary: The influence of nitrogen incorporation on the chemical composition, structure, mechanical, and electrical properties of refractory (MoNbTaVW)(1-x)N-x high entropy alloy thin films is investigated in this study. The structural change from body centered cubic to face centered cubic with increasing nitrogen content resulted in increased hardness but also material embrittlement. The films were synthesized by two different physical vapor deposition methods onto silicon and polyimide substrates.

Investigating the Role of Mo and Cr during the Activation and Passivation of Ni-Based Alloys in Acidic Chloride Solution

Jeffrey D. Henderson et al.

Summary: The study found that increasing Mo content can improve the alloy's ability to recover from surface activation, leading to quicker and more stable spontaneous passivation for Mo-rich alloys. During electrochemically-assisted passivation, some Mo was removed and Cr oxides accumulated at the surface, but the barrier layer properties were not dictated by Cr content.

Summary: The nitrogen-alloyed variant of the CoCrNi MEA exhibits higher corrosion resistance, while both nitrogen-free and nitrogen-doped MEAs show lower corrosion current and rates compared to 316L steel. The addition of nitrogen significantly improves the pitting corrosion resistance of CoCrNiN.

A non-equiatomic FeNiCoCr high-entropy alloy with excellent anti-corrosion performance and strength-ductility synergy

Pengfei Wu et al.

Summary: The newly developed non-equiatomic Fe40Ni20Co20Cr20 (at.%) high-entropy alloy (HEA) shows excellent strength-ductility synergy, improved corrosion resistance, and higher electrochemical corrosion resistance compared to other alloys. The stability of the passive film in the alloy is attributed to the interaction between Co and other elements, leading to the formation of Co(Fe,Cr)2O4.

Potential Dependent Mn Oxidation and Its Role in Passivation of Ni38Fe20Cr22Mn10Co10 Multi-Principal Element Alloy Using Multi-Element Resolved Atomic Emission Spectroelectrochemistry

Junsoo Han et al.

Summary: The study focuses on a non-equiatomic Ni38Fe20Cr22Mn10Co10 solid solution alloy, showing that Ni dissolves at all investigated potentials, Fe and Co are incorporated into oxides or hydroxides at low concentrations, and Cr and Mn are enriched at passive potentials. At low passivating potentials, Mn(II) dissolves and is incorporated into oxides containing large concentrations of Cr(III).

Microstructure and corrosion behavior of FeCrNiCoMnx (x=1.0, 0.6, 0.3, 0) high entropy alloys in 0.5 M H2SO4

Kuo-Min Hsu et al.

Summary: The effect of Mn on the passivation behavior of FeCrNiCoMn high entropy alloy was investigated through anodic polarization experiments, revealing that a decrease in Mn content can enhance the corrosion resistance of the alloy by increasing the Cr2O3 content in the passive film. However, the competitive oxidation of Mn with Cr can lead to a reduction in Cr2O3 content and deteriorate the corrosion resistance of the alloy.

A perspective on corrosion of multi-principal element alloys

N. Birbilis et al.

Summary: Metallic alloys are essential for advanced technologies and systems, but corrosion remains a significant challenge. Recent research has identified a class of metallic alloys called multi principal element alloys (MPEAs) with unique physical properties and high resistance to corrosion, potentially expanding their use in harsh environments. Ongoing progress, prospects, and challenges in MPEA research are briefly reviewed with potential future research directions elaborated.
