Establishing a 3D aggregates database from X-ray CT scans of bulk concrete

Mingzhi Wang et al.

Summary: This study proposes a computational sequence to extract individual 3D concrete aggregates from computed tomography scans, establishing a database of 1442 aggregates with detailed information. Comparisons with existing reconstruction methods demonstrate that characterizing concrete composite with detailed information of each constituent can provide a more realistic representation of the composite. The vision of digital concrete with realistic aggregates input is further demonstrated through an example application.

Bridging the gap between laboratory and field moduli of asphalt layer for pavement design and assessment: A comprehensive loading frequency-based approach

Huailei Cheng et al.

Summary: This study proposes a comprehensive frequency-based approach to correlate the modulus of the asphalt layer obtained under different loading modes. Observations made at field experimental pavements show that the modulus obtained via laboratory 4PB tests are close to those of vehicular loading schemes, while adjustments are needed for those derived in UC, IDT, and FWD modes.

Influence of different polyethylene wax additives on the performance of modified asphalt binders and mixtures

Yu Zhang et al.

Summary: The study found that most tested wax additives improve the high temperature stability and moisture resistance of asphalt mixtures, but reduce low temperature stability. OPW showed the best performance among all selected PW additives due to its uniform microstructure.

Effects of actual loading waveforms on the fatigue behaviours of asphalt mixtures

Huailei Cheng et al.

Summary: The study found that the fatigue lives of compacted asphalt mixture samples under the single-axle wave are significantly higher than those under the haversine wave, while the tandem-axle wave results in the lowest fatigue life. Dissipated energy plays an important role in determining fatigue life and shows a unique relationship with the sample's fatigue life.

Cohesive zone modeling of EAF slag-included asphalt mixtures in fracture modes I and II

S. M. Motevalizadeh et al.

Summary: This research investigated the fracture properties of asphalt mixtures containing different sizes of EAF aggregates under low-temperature conditions through simulation modeling and statistical analysis. The results showed that the inclusion of fine EAF aggregates increases the fracture failure probability, and introduced a predictive model to predict the performance of different fracture modes.

Physico-mechanical and microstructure properties of cemented coal Gangue-Fly ash backfill: Effects of curing temperature

Weizhen Liu et al.

Summary: High environment temperatures in deep coal mines can significantly affect the strength and microstructure of Cemented Coal Gangue-Fly Ash Backfill (CGFB). Higher curing temperatures accelerate the hydration reaction rate and generate more hydration products, leading to changes in the failure mode of CGFB specimens. Under the influence of temperature, the porosity of CGFB specimens better reflects the mechanical behavior of the backfill.

On the rheological properties of multi-walled carbon nano-polyvinylpyrrolidone/silicon-based shear thickening fluid

Li Sun et al.

Summary: This study investigates the rheological properties of shear thickening fluid (STF) enhanced by different additives at varying mass fraction ratios. It was found that the MWCNTs-PVP/SiO2-STF system shows significant shear thickening effect when the PVP mass fraction is increased to 0.15%, with the best performance observed at 0.1% PVP and 1mm plate spacing.
