Utilization of copper mine tailings as a partial substitute for cement in concrete construction

Ahad Barzegar Ghazi et al.

Summary: In this study, Sungun copper mine tailings were used as a partial substitute for cement in concrete construction, leading to increased compressive strength and chloride penetration resistance. Concrete samples with 10-50% and 60-70% mine tailings as a cement substitute exhibited a higher increase in compressive strength compared to the control sample.

Environmental and human health risk assessment of sulfidic mine waste: Bioaccessibility, leaching and mineralogy

Jillian Helser et al.

Summary: The study revealed that sulfidic mine waste contains high levels of metal(loid)s and key minerals, with varying orally bioaccessible fractions. Human health risk assessment indicated carcinogenic and non-carcinogenic risks for most samples. Leaching tests showed high mobility of metal(loid)s, especially Pb, posing potential environmental risks. Sequential extractions coupled with mineralogical analyses highlighted the highly mobile levels of Cd, Pb and Zn, posing environmental and health risks.

Partial replacement of metakaolin with red ceramic waste in geopolymer

Madhuchhanda Sarkar et al.

Summary: The study investigated the influence of replacing Metakaolin with red ceramic waste in geopolymer formulation on geopolymerization and properties. Results showed that moderate replacement of red ceramic waste can improve compressive strength of geopolymer mortars, but excessive replacement leads to a significant decrease in strength.

Properties, durability and cost efficiency of cement and hydrated lime mortars reusing copper mine tailings of Lefke-Xeros in Cyprus

Ceren Ince et al.

Summary: The study investigates the consequences of dewatering copper mine tailings in mortars, aiming to contribute to the sustainable development of construction materials and the socioeconomic recovery of the Lefke-Xeros area of Cyprus. The use of copper tailings has been shown to play a substantial role in reducing thermal conductivity and increasing cost efficiency of mortars in construction practice. The results significantly contribute to the sustainable development of construction materials through the use of mine tailings to support environmental sustainability and socio-economic development.

Strength Properties of Sustainable Mortar Containing Waste Steel Slag and Waste Clay Brick: Effect of Temperature

Md Jihad Miah et al.

Summary: The study investigates the use of waste steel slag and waste clay brick as replacements for natural sand in mortar, with a focus on tensile and flexural strength of mortar at normal and elevated temperatures. Results show that the strength of mortar increases with higher WSS content at ambient condition, but decreases significantly at elevated temperatures.

High strength one-part alkali-activated slag blends designed by particle packing optimization

Priyadharshini Perumal et al.

Summary: This paper focuses on the development of high-strength and eco-friendly one-part alkali activated mortar with ground granulated blast furnace slag as the main precursor. By adjusting particle packing and using various mineral admixtures, significant strength improvements were achieved. The results showed that ternary blends with all three binders achieved the highest compressive strength values and also provided potential economic benefits.
