Nanoindentation-based micromechanical characterisation of ultra-high-performance concrete exposed to freezing-thawing

Ruifeng Xie et al.

Summary: This study characterizes the micromechanical properties of ultra-high-performance concrete (UHPC) under different freezing-thawing cycles using nanoindentation technique. The results show that the indentation moduli of different components in UHPC decrease moderately with increasing freezing-thawing cycles. The interfacial transition zone (ITZ) between steel fiber and cement paste is identified as the weakest zone, with its thickness increasing after freezing-thawing cycles.

Numerical evaluation of the representative volume element for random composites

A. El Moumen et al.

Summary: This study proposes a quantitative evaluation of the size of the Representative Volume Element (RVE) in linear elasticity and linear thermal conductivity of random heterogeneous materials, and investigates the variation in RVE size versus volume fractions of components and the contrast in their properties. Through numerical simulations, it is demonstrated that there exists a volume which is statistically representative of random microstructures, serving as an important component for homogenization-based multiscale modeling of materials.

Aggregate Geometry Generation Method Using a Structured Light 3D Scanner, Spherical Harmonics-Based Geometry Reconstruction, and Placing Algorithms for Mesoscale Modeling of Concrete

Petikirige Sadeep Madhushan Thilakarathna et al.

Summary: Mesoscale numerical modeling is an effective method for representing concrete as a three-phase material, with accurate aggregate geometry representation being crucial for predicting mechanical properties and damage in concrete. A novel method of 3D scanning aggregates and parametric geometry reconstruction is presented in this study, along with innovative aggregate placing algorithms and parametric generation methods for various aggregate shapes. Challenges and solutions for transferring aggregate data to finite-element software and mesh generation are also discussed.
