Development of novel composite rejuvenators for efficient recycling of aged SBS modified bitumen

Xiaobin Han et al.

Summary: Efficient recycling of aged SBS modified bitumen (ASBS-MB) is a difficult problem in pavement materials. In this study, novel composite rejuvenators (NCRs) were synthesized using isocyanate terminated long chain active rejuvenators (ITLCARs) and aromatic hydrocarbon oil (AO) to restore the properties of ASBS-MB. The results showed that NCRs successfully restored the molecular weight and physical properties of ASBS-MB to the level of original SBS modified bitumen (SBS-MB). The high-temperature and low-temperature properties of the rejuvenated SBS modified bitumen (RSBS-MB) recovered by NCRs were better than those restored only by AO.

Effect and mechanism of acidic aggregate surface silane modification on water stability of asphalt mixture

Ming Yang et al.

Summary: The study evaluated the water stability of asphalt mixtures incorporating granite aggregates by utilizing a silane coupling agent to modify the surface of the aggregates. The results showed that the silane treatment significantly increased contact angles and reduced hydrophilicity, leading to improved residual stability and bonding interface between asphalt and aggregates in the asphalt mixture.

Laboratory evaluation of the effect of rejuvenators on the interface performance of rejuvenated SBS modified bitumen mixture by surface free energy method

Zhilong Cao et al.

Summary: The research evaluated the surface free energy and related parameters of SBS modified bitumen after aging/rejuvenating, and the effects of rejuvenators on water damage resistance and moisture sensitivity. Results showed that rejuvenators can enhance the surface free energy and improve the cracking resistance and interface stability of aged SMB. Hexamethylene diisocyanate showed the best performance among the rejuvenators tested.

Xiaobin Han et al.

Summary: The study compared the rejuvenation effects of RCERs-AHO and TDI/HDI-AHO on ASMB, finding that RCERs-AHO had advantages in enhancing high-temperature rutting resistance and low-temperature cracking resistance, as well as improving the deformation recovery ability of RSMB. Additionally, RCERs-AHO could better reconstruct the cross-linking structures of aged SBS compared with TDI/HDI-AHO.

Preparation of reactive chain extension rejuvenators and its application in the aged SBS modified bitumen sustainable recycling

Xiaobin Han et al.

Summary: This study focused on the preparation of reactive chain extension rejuvenators (RCERs) using polyethylene glycol and diisocyanate, and investigated their effect on the rejuvenation of aged SBS modified bitumen. Different rejuvenation systems were constructed and their influence on the physical properties of ASMB was studied. The results showed that RCERs could enhance the molecular weight and thermal stability of SBS, leading to better rejuvenation effect on ASMB.
